Overclocking 6870

Thread Starter
I want to overclock my 1gb amd radeon hd 6870. Ive read: http://www.overclock.net/t/633816/how-to-overclock-your-amd-ati-gpu and I just switch them up by 10-20 each time until you see messed up artifacts.

Also im unsure where to even start on volts yeah im new to this my CPU was easy it had it in BIOS I could switch profile to higher OC awsome this more difficult.

Specs:
i7 860 @ 2.8-0 GHz (8CPUS)
8GB Ram
Windows 8

AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB

Any help or anyone with a similar system can help me?

I also want to post about I call it not normal an issue....

Desktop idle temp is 46-50 degrees thats fine for me.

However when I go to run BF3 it goes straight into 90-100 degrees yes on highest quality but I have no lags no issues at all fps wise. however the game does give me a DX Error waiting for support to come with a fix they seem to think its windows 8?

Im just wondering why are my fans so high even in a ugly looking game my fans fly to 100. I done a check before in MSI Afterburners Kombustor and I was hitting over 100 degrees at 60FPS I know my PC is good enough to run these games like BF3 etc it runs perfectly I just dont understand why the temps are so high ? Its causing issues with some games freezing my BO2 randomly decides to crash sometimes.

Im using latest amd BETA version ( to try sorting issues didnt help )

I dont think my Fan speed is automatically going to what it should personally. I have my PC side off so more air can get through I also have made clean reinstall and took all the dust out.

Be nice im new smile.gif

All of a sudden I am getting an issue when I resize the window it seems to glitch as though I was on smaller resolution at same time and flashers on my screen. Changing resolution and setting back fixes this issue. This is before I even started OC.

Regards Michael.

First off when you start to OC you will get higher temps. If you are already hitting 100 in games that is the max alot of people will say no more too, most would say 90 though. Actually my max is 70 EX: but my 7970 is a dual cooler and i let it do its job i just do not like it to overheat. But no matter, Is your 6870 a single cooler? original reference model? As these typically heat up more than a custom cooler. If this is a single cooler and you do not have good ventilation then that heat will be recirculating into your system, 1-2 fans is not enough

Also regarding your 100% fan speed issue ensure that you do not have more than 1 programs trying to control your Graphics card, you can also go to MSCONFIG.exe and disable MOM.exe and CCC.exe for startup, as they arent required for your Display driver

I'd recommend you upgrade first off, simply because of the 1gb. 2gb is more than enough for single monitor gaming these days. But if this is not your solution then you might want to check the thermal paste on your GPU die. Is the card dusty? How good is your case airflow? EX: i have 2 delta fans on the side of my system to ensure good circulation.

I would not overclock until you have resolved your heat issue, to avoid any damage to your card.
When you decide to start overclocking you will want to confirm that your GPU has unlocked voltage alot of people will overclock their card through a program called "MSI afterburner" this program also features In game monitoring of your Graphics card Usage temps fan speed clock rates. Just be careful as if you have to many programs monitoring your card it can cause your game to crash.

If you decide to upgrade i would recommend this card
