Any Tidewater Modders out there?

Hey Y'all,

Recently decided to go with a fairly cheap upgrade to the lan box and decided to try out both a Silent Water and Tidewater from Thermaltake. Hey, they were on sale at Newegg and the CPU I bought was OEM, so I needed something. Anyway right now the Tidewater is cooling a litely OCed x800, but that chipset apparently has problems with my mobo(ASRock Dual VSTA) So I was going to upgrade to a 7950 gx2 or the new 1950 "Godfather" from Sapphire.

What I wanted to ask was how do I change the waterblock out on the Tidewater? It looked to me that this thing should be able to handle one of the full waterblocks from Danger Den just fine. Granted this thing isn't all that powerfull but I would think the volume increase in the waterblock sizes shouldn't affect it that much. Any thoughts?

P.S. - Flames welcome, wittier the better.

We don't flame. So no worries there man...we all have to start somewhere. OCN is one of the few places that will educate rather than belittle someone So welcome to the forums and enjoy your non-flaming stay. Fill out your system specs under the "user CP" so we can help you if you have any hardware problems in the future.

Ok, so here's the deal. Those kits are not that great. If you are already looking for an upgrade you will be better off selling off those kits & buying a better setup. The second you start modding those kits they become worthless. So just get your money out of them and get something better.

The tidewater is a sealed loop once you open it, it becomes a piece of junk

Thanks for the info everyone. So the thing can't be resealed properly? Bummer. I wanted a waterblock that would alloy me to not use ramsinks on the next upgrade. Overall, I'm not unhappy with the performance I'm getting out of them, I will say that. Bilt my first pc in HS(a P166 non MMX, those were the days) but I'm new to overclocking.

Hey Frostbite, where did you get the AM2 upgrade board? I can't find them listed anywhere.

I haven’t talked about a tidewater in a while but I though they used 1/4ID tube and the waterblock was its own entity so it could be replaced with a higher quality block.

But... those units are not ment to be moded and replacing the water block may not help much. I think the weak point on those sealed units are not so much the water block and more to do with how it dissipates it heat out of the unit (radiator) and flow of the unit. So if you going to spend money on a new waterblock it might be wise to hang onto that money and get one with 1/2ID fittings when you have a real water cool system.

Thanks Frostbite. On a related matter, I copied and pasted the designation that eWiz uses into Froogle and now I feel like an idiot

I wasn't looking for an equiviant water block to what I already have, though. I was looking specifically at running the tubing into a Danger Den DD-GX2 dual waterblock. I wanted to change out the block with one that would cool everything on the card. This isn't a money issue so much as I think that if I could get it to work, it would work well enough for me. Right now according to ATi tool, this thing keeps my x800 at 45-50C under load on the quiet setting and I'm okay with that. My x800 is just a bit beyond PE speeds, but I haven't been able to soft-mod it because I cant find a bios that'll work. If the concensus is that the Tidewater can't be reconfigured sucessfully, then I'll probably still try it somethime down the road, just not on anything expensive.

This is just one of many projects I've got burning on this rig. I like taking things that are worn out and making then new again. Like this stupid case is going to get a new bezel(fabbing it out of sheet steel), repainted, and a bunch of other things to compliment the new window(old one was broken), handles, etc.

That actually brings me to the one complaint with the tidewater that I have - I had to make a horseshoe bracket to mount the sucker.
