$500 - $1000 Laptop Suggestions?

Thread Starter
So, I'm going into high school, and my Atom N270 won't be able to hold it's own any longer, especially if I get into the tech classes I wanted. So, here it goes:

What is your maximum budget? $1000, but $800 is more realistic.

What country are you in? U.S.A

What will be the uses of this laptop? Lots of HD video (both watching and editing), a fairly large amount of gaming, lots of Office-ey things.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? ASUS is #1, Acer and Lenovo are second best.

What screen size do you require? A 14-inch class would be perfect, 15-inch class would be acceptable as well.

What screen resolution/finish type do you require? 1920x1080 would be perfect, and a matte screen.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? New all the way.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) 3 hours minimum, 5 would be freaking great, and 7....I would be your best internet friend ever.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? Stuff like Team Fortress 2 (medium), NFS: Carbon (high), Spiral Knights (high or medium), GTA IV (medium), Far Cry 3? (medium?) and who could forget MINECRAFT....

What operating system do you need? (if any) Windows 8 would be perfect, Windows 8 Pro isn't too much different in my eyes.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) Nothing too flashy, really anything like a matte black (or glossy black as a last resort) would be perfect.

How much hard drive space do you need? At least 750GB, 1TB... Once again, best internet buddy.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) Webcam, and the more USB 3.0, the better. HDMI would be great, especially if I can adapt it to VGA and DVI. And a DVD/CD reader/writer is a necessity for me. Dual-layer DVDs and me are like best buds.

Is there anything else we need to know? I want a 4th gen Core i7, with at least the HD 4600 graphics. I pretty much need at least 8GB of RAM, and if I can upgrade to 16GB that would be fine (or if it comes with 16GB, that would be sweet). If I could get this at my local Best Buy or staples (They would be in Fort Gratiot, Michigan) I would love it, since I don't much care for it to be shipped. And if possible, a backlit keyboard is almost required... And a relatively bright screen would be pretty good.

Well, the most powerful you can get for your money is the Lenovo Y510p with GT 750M SLI, nice 1080p screem with relatively good viewing angles, 1TB HDD, good sound and a backlit keyboard. Touchpad is bad. The GT 750M SLI is almost always as fast as a GTX 770M and it would be way more than you asked for

For less than 15.X", you have two good option in my opinion, though less powerful than the Y510p:

1. The Clevo W230ST 13.3" gaming laptop with GTX 765M, I7, very good IPS 1080p screen (really), 750GB 7200RPM HDD and .. compactness? the performance is good and will surely satisfy you and the screen is awesome. It would cost more than $1000.
Read the W230ST review

2. Acer V7-482PG-6662 : with an I5-4200U CPU and a GT 750M DDR3 GPU is has a lower gaming performance, but it will suffice for what you've asked. The 14.0" screen is an excellent IPS 1080p screen and I think it might be even better than the W230ST one.
Battery running times are also good with 6-7 hours of light web surfing. costs around $850-$900 currently in the US (memoryexpress)
Anandtech reviewed the bigger and more expensive brother if you want to read.

The Y510 is the best for this range. You just cant beat what it offers for the price. wink.gif
