question about sound blaster Z headphone amp and magni

Thread Starter
hello. I wanted to ask. can I use an external amp, like the magni, with a sound blaster Z that has an on board amp? will the amp on the sound card have any affect on the external amp?

thank you

Looks like the Z only has an amplified headphone output, with no line out, so there's no way to bypass the amp circuitry. Is the Z not able to power your headphones?

it's doing good for what I have right now(dt770 pro 80), but I am wanting to buy more headphones.I will either have to buy another dac/headphone amp or stick to lower ohms headphones. i'm not sure how good the headphone amp is on the sound blaster z. all it seems to do is just make stuff louder. i always have to turn games down to 50% with this soundcard.

I wish creative let you turn it off. I thought i saw old screen shots of the option to, in the control panel but I guess they took the option out.

Don't you have a creative panel that allows you to adjust volume?

I do. I have the volume at 30%. I just bought the ATH-AD700 that I will use for gaming. I don't need an amp with those, atleast.

down the road i'll buy an external amp/dac to listen to music on. that will let me use higher ohm headphones np, if I get some.

Magni > RCA to 3.5mm > Stereo out on Soundblaster Z

That bypasses the amp as the stereo out is not amplified.
Not trying to shoot you down or anything, but how high of an impedence headphone are you wanting to get? I think people need to understand that choosing an amp to match impedence on a headphone are a little bit naive, doesn't just work like that. There's other factor consider.

Example: a Sennheiser HD800 won't just run with no issues on an amp that says it supports up to 600 ohms headphone.

Plannars and electrostatics won't just run with just any amp either.

If your plan is to get some serious end-game headphones, I think you've got quite a bit of research to do. Otherwise you'd just be splurging money and not getting its worth.

NOTE: When using the stereo out on the soundblaster Z, some people report that positioning can sometimes be off. Some speculate that this is because creative thinks that you would hook up speakers to it thus the sound would be coming from at least a foot in front of you, rather then from 2 inches from your ears.

And some people have it reversed where 5.1 on the headphone port is entirely useless! biggrin.gif

Good thing the line-out is has a much cleaner signal. though, i wouldent use 5.1 with that either
