Hello all I've been looking at purchasing some speakers for my small room here. I used to have m audio av40/ back home I used for my desktop and I liked them, so I have been looking at the bx5a d2s and the bx8a d2s. Before I purchase these I want to see what is available and comparable in the price range, including non powered speakers+ an amp. I have been out of the non powered speaker game for awhile and feel overloaded with everything. I checked out the recommended amp page as well, it seems that it is years old and am not sure if those recommendations still hold.

Bump.. My main question is for around the price of the bx8a d2s, is there a better option with bookshelf speakers + amp? I had checked out the recommended speaker page but it is 4 years old.

I believe Monoprice have a rebadged version of the BX5's for under $200, most of the guys agree that the sound is pretty good for an entry-level powered desktop monitor.

You can save a few bucks and invest on a good source.

another excellent option can be used stereo gear right now I'm listening to my new to me Monitor Audio Silver S1 bookshelf speakers $11.25 (fantastic price ... cabinets had been spray painted...I sorted them out well enough they look pretty good now) and a $20 Kenwood KR-V106R receiver from the late 80s (100WPC.... good Sound quality looked near new when it came to me.)

pics

monitor audio silver (as mentioned before got these for $11 biggrin.gif)

however they looked like this when I got em ...jikes...

and my kenwood

obviously used takes luck / patience and some willingness to keep an open mind if you set out to find Marantz and only Marantz you might miss a awesome Sansui sitting right in front of you... and used gear can also have issues but I have a bunch more of this stuff and it can be a real bargain with timing / luck and a bit of research and care.
