How to reinstall 1155 socket protector?!?!?

Thread Starter
Im RMAing my AsRock Z77 OCF because I can't get it to boot on dual channel ram when both sticks boot fine by themselves. Other problem is the fans (cpu, gpu, case) continue to run endlessly after shutdown. I've looked through the bios as well as control panel to no avail.

Anyway, Im trying to put the socket protector back on andits being a PITA!!!! Its the most absurd design ever. Instead of having the alignment pins/notches on the outside, they're on the inside. It fits so sloppy that when you latch it down it moves resulting in bent pins!!!!!!

This is my first build, however I've removed the cpu 3 times to assure myself that my boot problem was the culprit of bent pins. Not once did I bend any pins, I don't see how you could, it just sits ontop. I didn't see what the fuss was about, gently set it in flat, latch and done.

Now I know what's gonna happen, newegg's gonna look at the socket and see the pins have been tampered with. This is BS and extremely aggravating. I've looked online for a video or something, but there's nothing. Just vids showing how to install the cpu, hell a monkey can do that. I watched neweggs 3 part build walkthrough videos b4 I ever bought any hardware, Paul made sure to mention how easy it is to bend pins, and also to save the cover for RMA purposes. Well, they need to show a vid on how to put that pesky cover back on.

Can someone PLEASE help. This is a $230 board that I don't want to bite the bullet on. This is intels fault for such an inferior and asinine design (the cover not the socket).

Thanks

I had exactly the same issue, thought I bent a couple pins. The cover should just ram straight down onto the metal socket clamp.

NOTE-It does not go inside the socket clamp, it clips ontop of the metal socket clamp

If it moves around, then that is definitely an issue you need to report in the RMA.

Sorry about the edits to this post, was thinking about another socket which I thought was different which was this one smile.gif

OMG do I feel foolish frown.gif.......

I thought the cover went directly over the socket and then you latch it down. Wow what a newb mistake. I feel so ignorant.....

I did a pretty good job at straightening them (only 4-5 pins got bent), I just hope to god newegg doesn't notice....

Gosh I feel dumb....

What was your similar issue? Booting on two sticks?

Btw guys (and gals) feel free to flame me for this one. Im tempted to delete the thread, but I'll just live with it :/

My issue was the cover. It took me a good 10 minutes before I figured out how to put it on. I was just putting it into the socket and slamming the clamp down... Not very smart, though I bent a couple pins.

For the RAM, try booting with one of sticks, then go into BIOS and have a look for the RAM settings, try and see if there is a dual channel mode or something disabled.
Also check the voltages of the RAM.
If this doesn't work, you should most definitely RMA the board.

Yeah that's exactly what I did, I for some reason thought it was like a dummy chip, I never would have thought (remembered) it attached to the clamp smh. Your lucky, cuz I bent probably 6 pins two or three times b4 I stepped away and resorted here. At least Im not the only one lol.

I hope it passes the RMA departments inspection. I KNOW it'll be the first thing they look at. Evidently people bend pins all the time... Honestly, I don't see how, it just sits on top, no pins to line up or press into place. Pretty simple. I have read a few threads where people RMA was rejected because of "bent pins" when they claim their pins where just fine. Seems like an easy escape for retailers/manufactures. I hope that doesn't happen to me...

It won't even boot into bios, it just goes into infinite reboot. It powers up beeps like mad, shows code 55 (mem not installed) then powers off, and then reboot itself.

It booted fine into bios with both sticks on the first test bench boot, and inside the case test with just cpu, gpu, ram. I then had to remove the cooler to install the second cooler fan, never has been able to boot since. I didn't over tighten the cooler, (tightened until I felt a natural stop), I even tried the stock cooler.

I looked in the bios, and iIr all 4 lanes were enabled. I also cleared the CMOS, and flashed the bios.

My phone doesn't take the best of pics, I got 3 different angles, if you just look at the farthest pins (ones against the grain) you can get an idea of the condition. Id take some with my digital cam, but I currently no longer have a pc.

Right next to the square molds is where pins were bent.

I think youll be ok on that board for the rma. though it sounds like asrock's quality control is just as bad for intel as it is with amd. good luck op

Yeah I've seen a couple z77 threads with failure to boot on two sticks needing RMAing.

Then again, even the best have a couple bad ones. I would have went Asus but none of their boards have consumer infor red headers. I also liked the color and uefi/bios and features the OCF offers. Hopefully I get a good board, I don't like to play the lottery.

Don't hate your self too much for the cover. Some motherboards use the dummy chip, others use the socket cover.
For example this is a dummy chip cover-
