Need a new CPU. Is the FX-8350 worth it? - Page 5

Your board has 4+1 VRMs and a small heat sink. Could you ghetto rig a fan to blow on the VRMs? UD3 owners have been doing that all year.

Sup guys I'm back!

So I successfully installed the FX-8350 in my HTPC but with some minor draw backs....I not sure if its the CPU memory controller related.
when I boot with all cores enabled; I get a BSOD code 0x50 once it reaches the desktop on boot (which I know is a RAM memory issue by the code ID). So I decided to set my XMP profile to Auto (1333mhz) and was able to boot and run prime95 with all 8 core stable for about 15 minutes before manually ending the test to reboot to BIOS.

But here's the catch: When I disable 4 cores and set my XMP profile to 1600mhz, the system is also stable without BSOD. I hasn't tried with 6 cores enabled yet.....

Right now I'm gonna see if I can recreate that BSOD again when I set my XMP profile to 1600mzh with 8 cores running.
Also my temps are freaking weird right now, even when running prime95. At first I was reading 40C from the BIOS and when I'm at desktop, it idles at 10 to 12 degrees celsius. It peaks to about 40s under prime 95, without any system hiccups or anomalies.

Ironically my Phenom II X4 965 normally idles at 30C before I sold it.

The 8 core FX will definitely run hotter than your old athlon for starters.

BIOS temps are usually the socket temp if I'm not mistaken, so it will be higher than the core temps. Core temps are going to be misleading until they hit ~45C. That being said, your temps look good for now.

I'd really recommend being careful on that board, if you're having stability issues when all 8 cores are running, you may be having power delivery issues.

If you know the ram timings/speeds that your sticks are rated for, I'd manually set those settings. I've never trusted XMP settings in AMD rigs.

I'll take your word for it, feeling very suspicious as well. I guess I should leave my RAM XMP profile to auto for now. Ironically I'm not feeling any hot air coming out of my case during prime95 test.

My phenom would eject a ton of heat at 4.0ghz

Hmm did you do the paste correctly? Yea dont overclock much on that board or at all even...2cents.gif

Yeah I applied a small center dot as usual on the IHS before installing my Hyper 212 on the FX-8350. I'm gonna stick with stock clocks until I get a new mobo.

Also, I'm very happy with this processor. I got rid of the BSOD for good by loading BIOS to defaults and now boots normally with all 8 cores with RAM at 1600mhz. thumb.gif

Survived an hour of Prime 95 and temps are back to normal now that is idling around 30 degrees Celsius compared to the odd readings I had a few days ago.

I'm satisfied of the emulation results as well since I'm getting around 50+ FPS in Dolphin running Fire Emblem Path of Radiance; and also Max 30FPS cap on Project 64 games.
