6950 Crossfire Issues - Page 2

I dont mean to be rude or negative in anyway,

But a CPU doesnt need to have 100% utilization for a CPU Bottleneck can happen,

With one gpu it only has 50% of gpu power of the crossfire setup, and can utilize it 100%,

With the crossfire setup you have so many gpu horsepower, your cpu just cant keep up.

here take a look at this
https://www.google.nl/search?q=x4+965+hd7970+benchmark&rlz=1C1PRFC_enNL520NL520&oq=x4+965+hd7970+benchmark&aqs=chrome..69i57.5107j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=amd+hd6950+crossfire+bottleneck

You will read about so many people upgrading from amd quad core to intel i5 / i7, and suddenly they get 100% gpu usage on both cards......

Or check this:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1200918/upgrading-from-phenom-ii-to-i5-2500k-will-it-make-a-big-difference-for-6850s-in-crossfire
Quote:
Games like SC2 would get the most notable improvement since it's primarily CPU intensive. Having a GTX 470 in a PII X4 955 BE vs. a GTX 470 in an i5-2500K yielded a 40+ FPS boost to the Intel rig.

Or check this image, With exactly the same Graphics Card, you see the AMD systems losing because they are bottlenecked by the cpu, so not giving ful potential of performance the gpu can offer

I don't find your responses rude at all rolleyes.gif

I've read a few threads saying that the 965 should have no issues with running 2 6950s not to mention overclocked to 4 giggle hertz.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110129072442AAbh6Br

I figured it would be a great CPU to run games at only 1680x1050@60hz

I hope this isn't a CPU issue as I've recently purchased it for this system

I've yet to get around to trying a clean install, but I will soon.

Those links you gave are 3 year old, and i think they talk about crossfire with older gpu's

When i had one hd6950 unlocked to hd6970 i noticed higher minumum fps going to a 2500k,
let alone if you have dual gpu's the gap wil be even bigger.

http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2832654347733501189/

But take a close look at these:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/radeon-hd5870-cpu-scaling_4.html#sect1

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/radeon-hd5870-cpu-scaling_5.html#sect2

In those links you can clearly see a AMD system scores WAY LOWER fps with the same graphics card then a Intel i5/i7 system.
This is purely because of the CPU Bottleneck amd cpu's have when running crossfire/sli gpu's or very powerfull single gu's

Overclock your cpu-nb if possible. That'll help a little bit. 2.8-3.0ghz is a good spot with 1.4v cpu-nb or less.

You're never going to see good use of those gpus or even a single stronger card with that cpu though. My phenom 2 quad at 3.8ghz cpu and 2.7GHz nb was holding back a single hd4890 at times and my gtx470 most of the time.

This is very good advice, in some cases overclocking the cpu/nb has more of an affect than overclocking the core speed.

Also, Skyrim is fairly terrible in terms of how it performs, it just favours intel CPU's - I saw a massive increase in minimum frame rates when I went from a Phenom II X4 to an i5.
It is also not the best game at utilising multiple GPU's.
I would try using other games to test utilisation over Skyrim.

Try giving the cpu/nb a decent overclock and see how that helps.

Thanks for the replys, not news I wanna hear lol thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

I will give overclocking the nb a try, hopefully it does something.

For now I'm thinking of buying a M14x R2 for the mobility at a great price.

I will look at options for switching my desktop

I found someone selling this board and CPU with stock cooler for roughly $200
