Keeping your room cool, share your tricks (with pics)

Thread Starter
Hi guys, there are so many people complaining about how hot the room gets due to the computer. So I thought I'd start a general thread about tricks to keeping your room cool. If anyone has a trick, that they use and works, takes some pics and explain. A large collection of idea's on how to cool your room in one spot for people to reference if they have heat issues.

I'll start !!!

Ambient room temp before this "upgrade" 47c, ambient temp now 44c. (this is temp under long gaming periods)
First My computer (Click to show)
Case: SilverStone Raven RV03
CPU: 4770k @ 4.8 ghz, 1.275v, x45 uncore @ 1.200v
Graphics: 2x GTX 660 TI cards, OC'd

Cooling:
H80i CPU water cooler (2x Coarsair Vortex fans)
6x 120mm Coarsair Vortex fans
2x 180mm case fans (whatever came with the case)

Venting heat into HVAC air return duct (Click to show)
There is an HVAC air return on the wall directly behind the PC (luck!), the vent is in the hallway near the ceiling. I tapped into the vent, and created one directly behind the computer and installed 2x 180x180x32 silverstone fans (80 CFM @ 17.8 dBA, 130 CFM @ 28 dBA).

The fans are connected to the CPU OPT connection on my Motherboard, so only run when the PC is turned on. They have switches to switch between 80/130 CFM.

I used zip ties to secure the fans to the duct cover, and clear tape to seal around the fans to keep the air moving in one direction. Movement at the lowest setting can hold a thick piece of paper against the grate.

btw: if you noticed the red cable coming out of the duct, that's a network cable that I ran through my duct-work down to the basement which comes up behind my TV downstairs. 2nd router down their for PS3, XBox 360, Cable box, and internet TV box.

I remember a guy hooked up his WC'ed computer with an entire geothermal system.... But I think that's a little overboard for this thread! tongue.gif

i wonder if anyone here lives near a river or ocean, it would be pretty awesome to setup a watercooling system using those large bodies of water.

I am into the whole "zero net energy" thing, and while it requires building a house to really get to zero, which is in progress, I have done some work where I live now.

One of the best things I've found that helps with cooling is using insulated ducts and inline duct fans, although you have to calculate the distance to determine the fan power or it can actually work against you.

Another thing, much cheaper, is to simply have a fan right at the duct(s) in the room, as it forces the chilled air to mix in the room. This was the first thing I ever tried, and just fans at ducts dropped my cooling bill by 32 percent while dropping the temp from 74 to 71.

I have a fan that blows the hot exhausted air from the pc around, because stagnant air is horrible for keeping a room cool. That's pretty much the main thing, to keep the air moving as much as possible.

I am not sure that would be safe, unless you could setup an industrial scale filtration system on the incoming water. But as for your wondering, I am about 250 yards off the Mayo River.

Just build a computer room in your basement and open the door! That's what I did, easy right?

Ambient summer room temp = 77*F
With door open in summer = 73*F
Ambient winter room temp = 67*F
With door open in winter = Burrrrrr*F

what do you need a filtration for? just do a normal watercooling loop but with your radiator submerged into the river.

The radiator would be clogged in a week (tops) with all the debris flowing downstream. Snorkle.gif

Then use some kind of filtration, doesn't have to be expensive.

Sorry, it would be. You'd be cleaning or replacing a filter at least once a week. Fish tanks sometimes require more filter changes than that and there's little to no sediment floating around in a tank.

Would be neat to see something like what you're describing though.
