CROSSHAIR IV FORMULA - PCIe Slot Enquiry

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

Short and brief - tried searching for this but couldn't find an answer or maybe I worded the search wrong frown.gif

Anyway...

My mobo has the following expansion slots as specified on the manufacturer website:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/CROSSHAIR_IV_FORMULA/#specifications

3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (dual @ x16, triple @x16 x8 x8)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x4
2 x PCI 2.2

I have two HD6970s in crossfire over PCIe 2.0 slot 1 and 3 (both confirmed to run at 16x).

The question I have is I wanted to install an ASUS Xonar Essence STX in the left over PCIe slot (2).

Will this lower the speed of my GFX card slots from 16x and 16x to 16x and 8x?

Thanks!

EDIT: ASUS Xonar Essence STX is a soundcard.

Yes it will. My Gigabyte GA-990FX-UD7 does that. You shouldn't notice a difference in graphics performance though.

If you put the STX in the dedicated PCIE x4 (bottom) slot, your two graphics cards should remain at 16x 16x. If you put the STX in the third x16 slot down from the top, it will definitely shift one next to above it to 8x. There are only 16 lanes available for the 2nd and 3rd slot to share, and the motherboard will switch them both to 8x mode if a card is present in both slots. Many motherboards work this way - and yours definitely does.

I recommend a new motherboard because they use "pwn" on their webpage when referring to its gaming capabilities. On a serious note, if you put a pair of GPUs in the x16 slot, they should run at x16/x16, and it shouldn't reduce the lanes used if you put the soundcard in the x4 slot. If I'm wrong and it does, you might see a 5% loss of performance, which really isn't anything significant or that overclocking can't make up.

You wouldn't even lose the 5% performance. The HD 6970s aren't capable of saturating a 8x 2.0 slot.

Hi everyone, thank you kindly for your replies.

I acknowledge now that inserting any card will change the x factor on most motherboards.

I referred to the manual in order to verify the location of the 4x slot (Hammong mentioned it being in the bottom slot) however to my suprise the manual (old and downloaded new) lists all four PCIe slots as 16x.

Refer images below - I've attached the IRQ table as well.

Going by how the slots are shared with IRQ looks to me like I can use SLOT 2 for the sound card and hopefully it will not affect SLOT1 and 3.

EDIT: Yeh the 4x SLOT is at the bottom as per the IRQ table and physically listed on the board itself. Funny thing is that Slot 2 also shows 1x.

Hi all,

For those seeking a conclusive result:

Tested the 2nd slot with a spare PCIe 1x network card and slots 1 & 3 (6970s in Crossfire) stayed as 16x.
