Recently Upgraded amd *budget* rig. 990fx, 8150 closed loop etc.

Hey guys, I'm just throwin my rig specs out there, I'll to into detail about my OC attempts and woes a little further down the post

Previous build: (note some parts were from an old fried out dell desktop *serious budget system*

Tower // Dell matx tower
Mobo // MSI 890GXM-G65 (matx form factor)
CPU // Athlon II x4 2.8Ghz
RAM // Samsung 2x 1gb 1033mhz, 2x 2gb 1033mhz
PSU // Thermaltake 600w
GPU // EVGA Nvidia GTX 550ti
HDD // Seagate 3.0gb/s 1TB

a few of these parts were upgraded over time,
CPU // FX 8150 3.6ghz + Closed Loop Watercooling *bundle* - got it on sale off newegg after christmas
RAM // Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 10600(?) 1333mhz - old lady hit me when i was out for an evening bike ride, insurance screwed me over, still payed out a tiny bit, enough for other toys an this upgrade.. the msi board couldn't handle anything higher than the 1333 w/o OC
HDD// 2x Seagate 250gb 3.0Gb/s *raid0 + 600GB storage drive.. - random drives friends gave me etc.

Eventually after a year of catching up financially, getting settled the new place, etc. etc. I was able to finally go out an take a little bit of cash an piece together my next system,
I did have to borrow parts from my previous build, which aided in piecing together the old system basically, thus allowing my wife to have a system better than her dated laptop.

Current Build:

Tower // Corsair 200R
Mobo // Asrock 990FX Extreme4 AM3+
CPU // AMD FX 8150 3.6Ghz //// w/ Closed loop Asetek/AMD watercooling system
RAM // 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1333mhz
PSU // Cheiftec BPS-850C2 NITRO II 850watt
GPU // Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce GTX 650ti Boost 2048mb
HDD // 2x 250gb seagate (raid0), 1x 600gb western digital - all 3.0gb/s ( this is one area I plan on upgrading in the near future )
Optic // Lightscribe dvd burner etc.

I came here to learn as much as I can about overclocking, and just grow my knowledge base on good systems in general, I've been a novice system builder for the past 7-8 years
I love building computers, I used to be a huge intel fanboy until I had to pair up with a more budget friendly system wink.gif, alas AMD has grown on me.

Recently I've tinkered with the Bios on this board, and changed the OC up to 20% 4320mhz, set the ram to 1599mhz, the system ran stable for 3 days, i did start high and work my way down the menu's until it gave me a stable running setup, but I came home; tried running my system today, and I'd walk away and come back with it crashed with kernal 41 errors, so I took the over clock off and I definitely want to learn about how to get this system up there. From what I've read these 8150's are no fun frown.gif, I'm hoping to push it up there with this closed loop system I have on it, I'm wondering as well if my ram is even capable of achieving good numbers? Now that I have a board that can handle higher stock ram speeds, I plan on just going with 2x 8gb sticks of corsair vengeance @ 1866Mhz, so I can push my cpu a little higher up there.

If anyone has any idea on how to get a little more oomph out of this system, all tips and/or criticism even.. are greatly appreciated, Feel free to reply or PM me with any info.
Thank you for reading my Lengthy Post!

After setting your overclocks, what are you using for stability testing? You should be running Prime95 for several hours at least. If your computer survives that THEN you can call it stable. Others say 24-48 hrs of Prime95 testing with no errors is really where you want to be at to call it stable.

I had a computer that ran stable for months on a roughly 30% overclock. Netflix, websurfing, some games etc. But 10 mins into Prime95 testing, it bluescreened. This revealed to me that there was some tweeking left to do.

Something else I leared is that running an unstable overclocked system can cause file system degredation over time, even hardware damage. So, start small and inch your way up. As for recomendations on overclocks, I dont have any experience overclocking an 8150, perhaps someone else will post.

Hey wiz!, Thanks for the tip, its been about 8 or 9 years since I've had a decent enough system to want to try and overclock, my last little setup I just used msi's oc genie but even that ended up tweaking out after a little while, I definitely forgot about prime95 etc., I want to get my system up there an completely stable most definitely.

I recently acquired some more hardware, i swapped the crucial ram for some corsair vengeance 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 1.5V.. 4x4gb (16gb).. has some better heatsinks etc. Should be a little more stable when I try over clocking after i figure out more about this 8150 etc, also got ahold of an OCZ revodrive x2 100gb for my main OS drive, man was that a pain to install and still have my 2x250 wd mechanical drives running their raid 0 operation. Every thing is smooth on stock right now finally after 3 days of tweaking things and changing raid settings back and fourth an reformatting etc. to get this ssd to work right.

My windows experience index albeit not a legit benchmark, has my cpu / memory @ 7.6, and the rest are 7.9, I'm sure I can bump my processor and ram up a bit, this asetek has the "core" temp sitting at 15C-18C idle, 27ish C underload, the therm sensor in the socket itself is usually sittin around 30C I Believe.

The psu I was surprised about, I was originally gonna get a 750 watt for around the same price, I went to the St. Louis Park, MN Micro Center an got it there, it's definitely bulky feels pretty solid, the psu, cables, etc; it doesn't feel like a cheaply made psu, I've had it for only about two weeks and so far it's been just fine I haven't been worried about it the least bit, oc'd my 8150 to 4ghz and it went smooth on prime etc, you can grab one an see for yourself. Bang for your buck it feels like a solid buy to me.
