[Q] Multiple RAID's on 2 drives?

Hi,

I'm considering upgrading my 2 Samsung F3's from my Monolith:
They are starting to be noisy as hell.

When I got them in the beginning they were quiet, but now they're making this typical "HDD cracking" noise. It's just that I don't want to lose my data.

Drives I currently have:

2x Samsung F3 1TB
1x Samsung F4EG
2x Seagate 250GB 2,5" (Got them for free from work)

Setup:

Samsung F3 drives in RAID0 (Total usable size: 2TB / OS & programs)
Samsung F4EG without RAID (Total usable size: 2TB / Media & Data)
Seagate 250GB drives in RAID1 (Total usable size: 250GB )

I'm thinking of replacing all my Samsung drives (F3 & F4EG) by 2x Seagate Barracuda 3TB's (Model ST3000DM001)
They have 3x 1TB platters & run at 7200 RPM. Some reviews are good, others are just average.

I would run them in RAID, but I have the follow question:

Is it possible to run 2 types of RAID on the same disk?
For example:

1,5TB of each drive in RAID0 & 1,5TB of each drive in RAID1

This will result in a 3TB RAID0 volume (programs etc) & a 1,5 TB RAID1 volume for data security.
I will keep using my Seagate drives as well, but the 250GB just isn't enough rolleyes.gif

I will be using the Intel Rapid Storage (AKA onboard storage controller)
Specs are in my signature under "Monolith".

Before people ask me, I'm will be upgrading to an SSD when I have some spare cash. Data security, however, is more important to me.
And I also have some more important upgrades that a SSD:
  • Pedestal
  • GPU
  • Custom loop

Anyway, thanks in advance ;-)

Yes, this is perfectly possible and is a good use of the space.

Simply back up your existing data (if necessary), reboot into the IRST RAID ROM, delete any existing RAID volumes utilizing those two drives, create an appropriately sized RAID 0 first, and then use the remainder for your RAID 1 by selecting the same drives again.

I've done this before and it works well (barring any TLER problems). The faster half of both disks is kept as a RAID 0 and the remainder as a redundant RAID 1 and they only impact each other if you are accessing both simultaneously, which should be a rare occurrence if you have thought this through at all.

one of the reasons i switched to intel was because of Matrix Raid. not sure if AMD can even do it or have an equivilant. i actually have two seperate RAID 0 partitions (100Gb+831Gb) because i only have two 500Gb drives. if i had 3Tb (back then) drives like your planning i would have gone RAID 0/RAID1.

Okay, that cleared it out :-)
Thx and both repped ;-)
