[Techday] - Xbox One and PS4 are not “PC’s in a box”

People often compare the hardware of the next-gen consoles and the PC, compare specs on paper, and conclude that these consoles must be “PCs in a box,” he said.
“That is patently untrue. While there are many commonalities, there were platform architecture decisions made for the consoles that set them apart from the PC in a significant way: how developers access the hardware, the Xbox One’s ESRAM, and the PlayStation 4’s UMA are all powerful examples of such decisions.

From a terminology standpoint, a console is in every way, a computing device for personal use; a personal computer. Just like smartphones and tablets are special-purpose (communications, mobility, and general purpose) personal computers, so are consoles special-purpose (entertainment) personal computers. These clowns need to stop getting hung up on PC=Windows desktop computer.

The article itself doesn't really even stay on topic. It tells us that they are not PCs without a real explanation, moves on to tell us about the awesome computer hardware used in them, and then starts talking about AMD for the last half of the article.

I wouldn't say any of those are PC's. Usually when people talk about PC, they include the hardware customization and all the goodies. The consoles in a general way function just like a PC but with a different target audience and different purposes.

Hardware is easily comparable, but the firmware is very different. As far as I understand it, the PS4 is basically an APU using GDDR5, while the XB1 is a "stock" APU. They're both x86 and have customized PC hardware, so yes, you can compare them.

While I agree that the term PC can be used to describe a wide range of personal computing devices its obvious from the context that they are talking about desktops. We do the same here on OCN all the time when talking about mac vs PC, tablets vs PC ect. There is no point getting hung up on semantics when we all know what they mean.

As for the rest of the article well yeah I agree that its very empty on content.

Its in short:
  1. PS4/XBO not PC's because hUMA/eSDRAM
  2. all consoles use radeon graphics
  3. ????
  4. Profit

well in this case, they're are referring to Xbox One/Ps4 vs PC (desktops)

Obviously nobody is saying...

Person A: Xbox One is just a PC in a box.

Person B: No way, the SG4 is so much weaker......

IMO this is what I go by.

Is there any reason why the hardware could not run a conventional operating system (W7, W8, Ubuntu, etc)?

If yes, they are not a pc ina box. If no, then it is really a pc in a box.

PC has become common usage to mean exactly that, a windows based desktop computer. By taking PC literally, you open to word up to be so general that it almost has no meaning. Smart phones are not literally smart. Sport utility vehicals are not sporty. Notebooks (laptops) aren't literally notebooks (paper) and only for taking notes.

Words often take on meanings past the literal when used in a certain context.
