You really think people like sitting in 2 hour traffic jams? I live in DC and commute 60 minutes to work. If there was an option of mass transit that didn't take 3 hours over my 1 hour car ride I'd do it in a heart beat.

Poor mass transit only adds to the problem.

well you also have the problem that american cities suffer from poor urban planning-ie there's not enough regulation and top down management and they just let everyone build wherever and however they want.

but also people have this irrational obsession with low taxes. sure it's reasonable to a degree. but really people in large cities shouldn't HAVE to own cars. paying higher taxes for better mass transportation means not having to spend that money on gas and buying new cars. though people don't mind spending money on those things. that's why the majority of the population seems to still be driving massive suvs and trucks that get less than 20mph. but raise taxes "er-mah-god"

What about, read what I said that even if it were progress, people will be scared to use it.

You just wait. If it will take off in the next 50 years come and tell me I was wrong.

And as I said I EXPECT IT TO TAKE OFF, but with additional technologies.

Perhaps something to 'shield the car' as well, non-existent right now.

Well yeah, we either progress or we don't... I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

And I said people would be scared to relinquish control as well, I just said it wouldn't take 50 years for them to get over it.

People don't want to wait for their increased taxes to influence mass transportation. And in a lot of cases, that won't affect a lot of taxpayers at all. For the people that live in suburbs and too far outside of any cities for mass transportation to ever be practical, it's not a very appealing thought, having to pay more taxes for mass transportation so some city folk don't have to pay for gas.

Heres my take on it, I both love and loathe the idea of automatic cars, A machine will never have the instinct that a human does, Plain and simple, The ability to look beyond the odds.

I love the idea of hoping into my car, Putting music on, Leaning back and going to sleep on my 3 hour trip to work, I hate the idea of not being in control, So i'll probably have both types of car.

also, theres nothing wrong with using older cars, Some people happen to you know, Like their car and not want to give it up, I'd never get rid of my Nissan patrol.

I now wonder how feasible is what they have achieved up to this point anyway. Sleeping in a car for 3 hours? Doing nothing? Is it really without bugs? Can it go through a thunderstorm? Does it not bug when a truck full of mirrors passes in front of it. I haven't researched it but I seriously doubt it can't bug.
