Will Motherboard Light up if PSU dead?? (need diagnosis)

Hi guys.. question. My desktop suddenly just died on me and I can't get it to turn on. It's been 2 weeks now. The day it died, I remember a strange smell, kind of like burning metal... then a few minutes later the whole system shut down.

However my motherboard lights are still on when the computer is off. However when I press the power button, other lights come up for half a second and then disappear, and the computer doesn't turn on. I'm suspecting it is the PSU because I never OC my processor or video card. Also if it's the cooler, wouldn't the computer still turn on as normal and then shut down a bit later after insufficient cooling?

My specs are

EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI
Q6600
EVGA GTX 285
Tagan BZ Series 900 PSU
H50 Cooler
Soundcard

here's a clip of what happens when I press the power button .... https://www.dropbox.com/s/lk3oad4do2xaxs8/VIDEO0034.mp4

Also to note, if I keep pressing the power button the (other) lights don't light up anymore, I have to pull the plug on the PSU and put it back in for it to do that.

Tell me it's not the PSU frown.gif such a pain to replace

try removing the video card and see if the pc will start up.That smell does kind of point towards the psu.

I realize you won't have no video but just see if it starts up and does a post beep.

The motherboard can still light green despite it being dead

When i killed my R3E by mistake all the lights would still turn on

On the other hand that Tagan is not very good so if it has killed itself you better hope it did not take the whole PC with it

it is possible, when the motherboard is "off" the PSU only sends the 5v from the standby line (called +5vsb) and it is always on. (unless your psu is seriously dead)

when you pressed the power button, and the psu "quickly turned on and off" its likely because some internal protection of the psu kicked in. (like overcurrent protection, because something is shorted)

you can test your psu without any other components (including the motherboard) by conecting the green wire (there is only one) to any other black ones. (on the 24pin motherboard power conector, you can use anything like a paperclip to conect those)

if the psu fan "turns on and keeps on" when you conect those wires, it could be because the short circuit (that triggers the over current protection) is elsewhere. (probably something very dead at the moment), if the psu still "turns on just for a short moment" you can with a large margin of safety say that there is something wrong with the psu. (maybe not only the psu, but at least with the psu too)

if it was a dead gpu your system would turn on and run as normal but not get video signal.

yeah that's what i thought. but I took out my video card and everything works. mobo works, psu and cpu coolers are spinning. weird. i get no display because there's no video output from my mobo but i'm assuming everything's working correctly

gonna need to find a cheap card to test it
