MSI Twin Frozr III 7950 Overclocking Instability then performance drop?

Thread Starter
Ive spent all day running tests on my MSI Twin Frozr 7950 (with 7970pcb, ASIC 60%) and the highest I can go is 1105 Core and 1505 Memory with default voltage. No other voltages helped me get to higher speeds. The strange bit is that when I try a higher clock speed and Heaven 4.0 crashes, setting my clocks back to 1105/1505 performs 30% slower than it did before the crash, resulting in me having to restart my computer. I have read about OC speeds way higher than this, and while I understand that it's a lottery when it comes to how well your card OCs, it seems like this is way off the '1200/1800' stories ive read. I have the power limit up 20%, should I get a hacked MSI Afterburner to make it higher? Thanks for your help.

I think 60% of asic is a bit low. You tried increasing the voltage? That instability sounds like voltage.

What are your temps? My TF3 couldn't clock well because of high temps, so I put an after market cooler on it and all was well.

60% is low? I dont think I can send it back to newegg for that reason though. Also, It appears that Afterburner's voltage setting wasnt actually changing the voltage of the card. Changing it via Trixx worked and I successfully completed 1150/1600 with 1.256 core voltage (vDroop was at 1.23 or so) and 1.581 memory voltage. I read that you dont want to go higher than 1.25 core voltage....is this true? and does anyone have input about the memory voltage? havent read anything regarding the number there.

Jedi: on the last Heaven 4.0 run it ran around 71C, but that was with the fans at 50%. For some reason I have to enable my own fan curve each time i restart the computer and I hadnt known that before doing that test.

I have the 7950 with the 7970 PCB with like a 58% asic. Mine can only achieve 1100/1500 on 1.2v so yeah, though I've run the core at 1.3 on 1150mhz just fine.

Temps aren't too bad, mine were worse sadsmiley.gif (80's on 58% fan speed-any higher and the fans would rattle). Those temps do not seem bad enough to cause any issues.

Does it seem any more stable since you used Trixx? I had those same fan curve issues when I was using trixx, decided to just use a "set" value.

I was always mad that I got a bum cooler on my TF3 (with 7970 pcb), but it has an ASIC of 87.5% and since I got a new cooler on it I have it running at 1175mhz/1575mhz @1.062v. I feel kind of lucky now.

I ran 2 full tests without issues after using Trixx and will try to push it further tomorrow smile.gif

Good to hear! I hope you can get a bit further, but either way @ 1150/1600 it is no slouch thumb.gif
