[DT] Only Terrible Parents Buy GTA for Kids, According to Rockstar - Page 3

GTA on the older systems was perfectly fine for kids in my opinion.

Even though my father was in the NYPD, I still had tons of fun shooting cops in the face or a crowd of them with rocket launchers and running them over while driving around. They weren't real people, and I knew that. Shooting a cop in the face in GTA is really no more violent than falcon punching your friends on Super Smash Bros, or blowing your friends up with explosives in Bomberman 64. Blowing up your friends, drowning them, kicking them off high places to make them fall to their death, apparently that's all OK.

Though the older games were fine, I'm not sure whether or not Xbox Live or the Playstation Network is suitable for children. The games are fine, but they're usually put in games with players much older and often told to go kill themselves simply because their voice is high pitched and they're immature, and annoy older players. I've seen younger kids get harassed by other players in-game for simply being young. Anonymous teenagers are some of the biggest douche bags online, and THEY are what aren't so good for kids. Not all of them are, but there are a lot of them.

Bad parenting makes a parent bad, not purchasing them a video game that all of their friends have. There is a clear difference.

That is such an idiotic statement I'm honestly not sure if they were joking or not.

This is BS. I think that is better to show them at a young age(childhood-puberty-teens) all the violence, sex and grief they're going to find in their lives, and its repercussions...than trying to isolate them in a Goody-Two-Shoes bubble from all which those kinds of parents consider morally wrong...that is, to their standards, which for me are totally screwed and hypocritical. If their offsprings don't find their violence fix in videogames, they'll find it in movies...or worse, in life. I'm not saying that there aren't certain limits within certain ages that shouldn't be crossed until the time is right, but rather that there is something proportional to do, and it isn't screwing videogame developers, but properly teaching your children the what's and what not.

In my opinion, by showing, you're teaching. Whatever that young girl/boy may do is entirely up to him. They may turn crazies, but come on, it's not like paragliding from a skyscrapper and bazooking everything and everyone is your accurate depiction of your everyday ultraviolence.

By directing/prohibiting like all those concerned "parents" seem to do, at best you'll get a normal person if he/she's been able to swim through all the crap thrown over him from craddle to independence. In the middle, you'll get a programmed robot who will repeat all the tabloid slogans and perpetuate that strict puritan blood/thinking. At worst, with prohibition, you're making those childs even more interested in that, cause pretty much everyone knows that the untouchable forbidden fruit is much more interesting than your everyday ground crappy carrot. And who knows what may happen...

Whatever, that's just how I feel. If what those parents do doesn't affect me or kindred souls(gamers), go on, make those child's childhood miserable, boring and putrid, cause if they feel like that about a cristal clear fictional representation, I wonder how will they feel about actual genitals and sexual intercourse...

Meanwhile, in the plain real world, everybody is having fun... cool.gif

I used to play GTA San Andreas from a dam young age, but not for the storyline or anything, just to use the weapons cheat and stand outside the hospital with 4 stars with my Rocket launcher blowing the cops up for hours on end, I had a very destructive nature when I was younger so it was entertaining! (Plus I damaged the disc soo much after a while (Few hours), if I did something else the game would say "Unable to read PS2 Disc".

Yeah...and GTA is not even the most chilly of their games. Yes, you can kill random people and an impulse spree, but they have others that make you premeditate that. At least games are more "honnest" - or ... maybe not.

Guess you could expand that and say that a east-european criminal ranting about the lack of freedom and choice in liberty city , while having the choice to kill or not other gang members or civilians is a immoral game, while gunning down "terrorists" or "dictators" in the other side of the world by the 1000s is "just".
At any rate, movie rating in the US is "broken"...killing - as long as there is no gore - is more acceptable than kissing -

Many documentaries on the subject. Worth seeing 1-2.

There are definitely a few flaws to this though. While I do 100% agree with what Lazlow said, there are also countless stores that will sell games, cigarettes, alcohol, etc, without asking for ID. It isn't always the parents fault, but at the same time most of this behaviour can be corrected either way. As long as you raise your kids to understand the difference between right/wrong, real-life/video games, and just generally how to be a good person, your kid will turn out fine.

Agreed. There are some children with these issues that no parent can overcome, it takes certain experiences and they can spin out of control very easily.
