it might be worth looking into netbooks then, it'll be able to provide him with what he seems to need(internet, office products, etc.)

Honestly, at that price range, they're all basically the same. You'll end up with a Intel Celeron or AMD C or E-series CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500 GB 5400 RPM (slow) hard drive, with a low resolution display panel. It will get the job done for word processing, web browsing, Netflix, watching DVD if the laptop has a optical drive, etc. It won't be capable of playing any current games, and most likely won't be all that light.

I would consider a higher-end used laptop, just to be able to get better performance for similar money. A lot of people turn over their laptops every 1-2 years, and you can get a barely-used laptop with an i5 or i7 for the high end of your budget that would run circles around the low end CPU choices in the $300-$400 bracket.

Just to give you a frame of reference, my old 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro from 2007 is faster than the Celeron and AMD C-series laptops they sell right now. That is six years old technology!

I would agree with hammong. There should be not too much choices with that budget mate. And most of the time you'll get low-entry netbook and low specs and in a year's time, I'm pretty sure that your son would ask you to buy him another newer laptop. If you could raise your budget to at least $600, you could get at least an i5 with 4GB RAM on amazon or newegg.

388.00 at walmart

Yes, it's refurbished, but it's plenty powerful for a 14 year old. There are several options at Wall Mart for your budget. There is even an Intel I 3 there too...That A8 processor will totally rock Netflix in HD. 17 inch screen, too He can even play most games on medium settings.

Hmm, you should try Lenovo's Outlet.
There is so many great laptops that is cheap as hell.
You can find a great one that'll fit your budget range.

Or you can get an Acer W3 tablet that cost either $299 or $349.99 using Intel Atom with full function of Windows 8.

You can buy him a bluetooth docking keyboard.
It'll give him more agile because it's quite lightweight.
