Quad Channel XMP Profiles Vs. Dual Channel

Thread Starter
I had two quad channel 8GB 2400 Kingston Hyper X memory kits installed in my rig last year. MB was an Intel DX79SR. When all eight sticks were installed for 16GB the max speed I could attain was 1600. With four sticks at 8GB I was able to get 2400.

I sold both memory kits about a month ago on E-bay and the buyer recently sent me a message stating he is only able to get the memory to run at 1333. Wants to return them because he claims they are defective. Turns out he is trying to run them on dual channel motherboards. Asus Maximus Extreme IV Z68 and an Asus Z77 Extreme. Claims he tried to run two DIMMS at a time and four at a time and gets the same results.

I'm thinking this is due to differenced in quad vs dual channel XMP profiles, but need proof and an official explanation to avoid feedback issues with this buyer.

If I am wrong and the memory should run at full speed in dual channel motherboards I might consider the return even though it is against the original auction policy.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you.

Are you sure he isn't trying to run it on JEDEC settings? Did he activated XMP?
Actually ask him to create screenshot of CPU-Z, and photo, or transcription, of BIOS settings.
