You get to protect the name of your software. You get to protect the assets and actual code. You don't get to patent algorithms. You don't get to patent math. This is how it should be in the US, as well as getting rid of so called "business methods" patents. A small step on a long journey to saner patent laws across the globe.
Beside the fact algorithms requires time and effort to make. The idea of a patent is to protect the intellectual
propriety. There is no point to work if every one is going to use your work for free. People have to live out of something. You know, have a house, feed their kids and enjoy life.
If every one (including Chineses) were contributing the same (I use your work but I also do my part to make the humanity knowledge progress) then I can imagine people wouldn't mind sharing their discoveries like they did in 1600-1700`s.
Before scientist did their work due to curiosity, now we only think at money because everything requires money now. You can`t make experimental research without very expensive tools and experiments.
