Changed RAM slot, memory not recognized, Asus Z87 Deluxe

So I am using an Asus Z87 Deluxe mobo and just installed a new CPU fan. Since this fan is smaller than previously, all my RAM slots are available, whereas before I was forced to use two adjacent slots. I changed it now so the two 8gb sticks of memory would be in the same color slots, which is what it should be apparently for dual channel. However, in this configuration it says I only have 8gb. My mobo doesn't seem to be damaged, but I don't know if there is a workaround here. Not sure if this is related, but ever since I installed his new fan and basically reinstalled my mobo today, my mouse only works in some USB ports in the back.

If you are running just two sticks, make sure they are both in the gold/yellow slots and are pressed all the way done until you hear them click in

They are. I even removed them and re-insterted.
