What Path to Take? Stick or Consider?

Thread Starter
So, having some doubts with AMD at the moment. I current own a Phenom II X6 @ 4.0Ghz but to tell the truth the heat and noise when gaming gets on my nerves. Also the power consumption is starting to concern me (an extra 100 watts for it). Around 450 watts if you take the monitor and speakers into consideration.

It's a 1045T so its stock settings are very slow @ 2.7Ghz. I run a Phanteks TC14PE, and my motherboard hits 38c sometimes (quite high for my board, used to be at 20-25c).

Idling my computer eats 150-200 watts (that's with the monitor).

So with all that information question is do I stick with my overclocked Phenom or try and go for something with less power combined with my HD 7850 which gives decent performance. Core performance is my concern, sure it's nice to have six cores but I don't actually use them to their full advantage.

So -
1: Stick with it and wait to see what may come along
2: Start looking into APUs (Kaveri) + My HD 7850
3: Go for a 95W FX chip (worried about end of line for AM3+ socket)
4: Do the thing us AMD fans will never consider

I enjoy overclocking but I don't think it's worth it any more, the heat, noise and power consumption for a gaming computer.

I'd say option 1 unless you already have an AM3+ mobo which i don't think is the case.
Kaveri will be coming only in Feb 2014, so option 1 it is.
AM3+ may or may not receive one last chip next year, only time will tell.

Yeah I do own an AM3+ board. I bought one ready for the Bulldozer chips (and sold it not long after!) smile.gif

Does CNQ cause any instability in your system? Usually decreases idle consumption by a measurable amount.

Yeah, I have custom P-states set up to undervolt it by a good amount. It runs at 0.9v idle (was 0.7 but was a bit unstable).

I've noticed you own an A10, how are they generally? I think it may be worth my while looking towards Kaveri.

Would you be better off just getting a CLC or a water loop? That'd take care of the noise and the heat and it sounds like you're not too worried about performance.

Perhaps the H100i? Maybe you'd be happy with an FX-6300 since it is a 95 watt chip?
I've been on the fence about upgrading too, whether I should wait for Steamroller FX/Kaveri if AM3+ is dead,or not.

op's thuban is 95W, too. and the 6300 will be, at best, a sidegrade.

@op, if power efficiency you are looking for, then go intel.

OR, you can turn your chip into a quad to make it run cooler at 4GHz. that's what i do paired with a 7950, except in some games like BF3 MP.
