Am I getting the right Qualifications!

Dear All,

I hope I have posted this in the right section, I couldn't find any other forums that would match what I wish to ask.
Basically I am looking to get a bit of paper to prove I know what I'm doing and in the proccess maybe learn a wee bit more.

The course's I am booking in for are:
CompTIA A+ 220-701 Training essentials
CompTIA A+ 220-702 Practical Application
CompTIA network+ N10-004
CompTIA server+SKO-002
CompTIa security+ SY0-301

The top two courses are the main ones I want, the bottom three come as an extra to the course bundle. Basically I am a PC enthusiast, building, overclocking, fault finding etc, but I'm all self taught through trial and error and asking you guys on here. I've learned a fair amount compare to two years ago, I currently reside within the Royal Navy and I want a qualification to fall back on when I leave.

My question is, are these the right courses or should I pick some different ones?

Thank you all in advance thumb.gif

try to add CCNA and MCITP with those and you should be good to go.

There is a MCTS 70-680 course I can add at no extra cost, is that basically the same as MCITP?

That's not exactly the same but fairly similar. I'm actually working on that one and it isn't a joke. Those Microsoft exams will kick you right in the dingleberries if you get any questions wrong since they are designed to attack your weaknesses and change the test. The industry standard is Microsoft and having any certs from them really helps when getting jobs. It is also one of the prerequisites for many of the higher-level Microsoft certifications.

As for the CompTIA tests, A+ and Network+ have a bunch of the same basic questions so they are going to be really easy to take together. Security+ is a bunch of really obvious security questions that is more of a starter in computer security than a real example of technical expertise, look into what area you would like to specialize in if you want to go the security route. Server+ is a good one to have that will help you become more familiar with working in server environments and a great way to get you ready for the training that the higher level server-related exams need.

All of these are great places to start with and grow from but you will need to find your niche in the industry that you enjoy working with. IT is going in a similar way to the medical industry and seeing a bunch of specialist being hired to be the best at what they do and leave all the other stuff to other specialist. Having a general understanding of other areas is a great thing to have but "jack of all trades, master of none" is pretty apt right now.

MCITP/CCNA

These are main courses that you should want to do.
CCNA will be hard on you without prior knowledge in networking.

You can self teach all of the microsoft with endless amount of videos (CBT and trainsignal are best among those). No MCITP course will teach you dealing with actual server issues/errors. All their certifications are done with dumps (examcollection.com).

A+ is needed to work in many shop and to be a "Qualify" technician in the eye of HP, Lenovo, Dell etc. Also Server + is the same, you will need it to do warranty claim for lenovo Servers, Going trought theyre exam at the moment.

MCITP is great to have exept if you want to do linux server... which is a minority. SBS server class could be useful, we got about 100 client that use it, but it start to be outdated.
