Top line air coolers - Page 2

Dual towers is what you see in the top of the line coolers because it works the best, and allows three fans, one ofwwhich is usually able to be oversized enough that it overhangs the bottom and blows air across the motherboard VRM area, negating the biggest downside to using tower coolers.

The differences to look for are:
- Fin Count ie Fin density (determines thermal conductivity)
- Fin Thickness (determines thermal capacitance)
- Number of heatpipes (determines efficiency of heat transfer)
- Size of heatpipes (8mm being ideal)
- Heatpipe layout (you want to have the air directly hitting them all)
- Fan size and speed (thermal transfer as well as noise)

The best coolers, such as the Phanteks and the Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme, have managed to find a close to perfect balance between all of the above variables. There are other ones, such as how the fins are attached (solder trumps pressed) and fin angle relative to 90deg (steeper angle means more surface area, at theeexpense of restriction).

Phanteks PH-TC14PE IMO. Smallest twin tower besides the NH-D14 and best heatsink performance (passive and with reference fans).

The Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme is a good bet if it's substantially cheaper (like $60 instead of $80 or $90 for example) and fits in your case height (and allow for GPU clearance due to the added cooler width) and need more max RPM

Good, thanks about those posts and details, so much appreciated :-)

I still feel i better stay with water cooler then, the tests performance shows a slightly edge for water cooler over air cooler, maybe in Noise field Air is better, but something else not much and water cooler has winner values [Corsair H100/H110], so then why not keep using water cooler over air cooler, the only reason i consider that air cooling is the price only.

Should include single towers cooling as good as twins, like Archon SB-E, NH-U14S, Megahalems, etc.

Silverstone HE01 is also very good. Has a FHP141 171cfm/2000rpm 140x38mm PWM fan. biggrin.gif

Put high cfm fans on the others and most will perform similar to Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme and HE01

Cooler size comparison (Width x Depth x Height looking from front of case with motherboard laying flat)
K2 . . . . . .= . . . . 8x 6mm pipes 140x128x158mm 146x154x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm PWM fans 43.2mm*
D14 . . . . .= . . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x130x160mm 140x158x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm fans 44mm*
TC14PE . . . = . . . 5x 8mm pipes 140x134x160mm 140x159x171mm w/ 2x 140mm fans, PWM adaptor 40-45mm*
Silver Arrow . = . . 4x 8mm pipes 147x123x163mm 151x149x168mm w/ 2x 140mm Fans 40.87mm*
SA SB-E . . . .= . . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 170x130x170mm w/ 140mm & 150mm PWM fans 31.9/39/46mm**
SA SB-E Extreme . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 155x130x165mm w/fans Smaller because of 140mm fan vs 150mm fan.
HE01 . . . . .= . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x119c160mm w/ 140x38mm PWM fan 42mm*
Dark Rock Pro 2 = . 7x 6mm pipes 133x124x166mm 133x149x166mm w/ 120mm & 135mm PWM fans
Akasa Medusa . = . 8x 6mm pipes 144x129.5x163mm w/ 140mm & 120mm PWM fans 49.6mm*
*cooler base to bottom fin. (add 8mm for motherboard to bottom fin.)
**fins are at 3 different levels

K2, D14 & TC14 are about same size cooler. TC14 with 2x 140mm fans can be problematic with ram clearance.

SB-E is widest by 15mm. Even wider with TY-150 fan = 170.

Extreme is 155mm wide because TY-143 fan is 151mm wide.

WOW, that is a long detailed post, i will take my time to read it carefully and see what i need or want from it, thank you very much!

I didn't read it but it is too late to post it, because in our house we don't use both, we have that central one up with the ceiling so we don't have issue with both of those you post link about.

Thank you very much thumb.gifbiggrin.gif

That is a very good list and helped me very much when I was trying to decide on a HSF for my mid size case.

It showed that the SB-E is too wide

The Phantek and Dark Rock Pro are too tall to fit.

I could not find a retailer for the K2 and Akasa Medusa.

The D14 would only work if I removed the heat sinks from my ram.

That left the HE01 which is a little bit noisy with 2 fans. But an FX8350 @ 4.7ghz running at 56.6C while stress testing works for me. smile.gif
