Personally I don't think a phone could completely replace a desktop/laptop for me. I can't imagine any sort of media creation (text processing, programming, photo editing, etc) on any phone would be better than that of a traditional computer. The UI just isn't equipped for it. I feel this was something that Microsoft overlooked when developing Windows 8 for a tablet-only environment. Phones can easily replace computers for people who just want to consume media, but they're completely ill-equipped for people who create media.

Won't buy a smartphone w/o a removable battery and microSD card now. I'm sorry, I like to keep my devices for longer than they are just "cool". After a year of odd charge cycles my lower-end HTC phone's battery didn't last too long. Replaced it w/ a T989 Samsung Galaxy SII

Because you can buy and sell a new Nexus(even now you can recover 50% of what you paid for a N4 last year on swappa.com) every year and in most cases still pay less than upgrading a flagship Galaxy every other year(off or on contract). If you insist on being 2 year behind(owning a GS2 in 2013) then that's different.

Note what he wrote, for MOST people. We on OCN are not MOST PEOPLE. MOST PEOPLE do not spend a few grand on a custom built computer. MOST PEOPLE do not frequent a tech forum. Common guys and gals, let's not get nasty. Give yourself a second to think. Reading comprehension....

Most people, like my folks who only check their email once in a blue moon, browse the news while watching TV...don't really need a laptop for that. In fact, I gave them my old transformer and my folks have been using it as their primary computer.

You guys haven't seen what Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) could do. When connected to a monitor and keyboard/mouse they switched over into "desktop mode" which looks just like their normal desktop OS and runs all of those programs as well. Canonical was claiming they could run both a full desktop and Android at the same time on a phone. Considering they'd probably share the same kernel I wouldn't doubt that too much.

I weep for your lack of vision. But that's probably why most people don't actually make innovations.

Maybe it's just how we define things, but personally I stop considering that a phone and more of a mobile desktop/laptop. When connected to a monitor/keyboard/mouse like my traditional desktop setup it loses the mobility of a phone. Don't get me wrong - I've seen Ubuntu's example, I use it myself (dual boot desktop and laptop), and I would love to have something like that. That said, I just don't consider it a full replacement, esp when the hardware for the phone is nowhere near as good as my desktop.
