For my own reference, what does PWM mean? I looked it up so I know the definition but I am still a bit clueless as to what the hell that even means.

I just went ahead and bought an Antec tricool fan because it has a manual switch on it. I decided I only need 4 fans, 2 intake and 2 exhaust to keep the dust down. I don't really need it for cooling since I have an HAF case that has a lot of holes in it and is pretty much open to the outside in many ways. Plus I have a very good heatsink on my CPU and the only thing that really heats up is my GPU which I never use for over an hour at a time when gaming anyways because it's not good for you to be gaming for 3 hours at a time without getting up and doing stuff.

My fan configuration is this: 1 140mm intake in front, 1 200mm exhaust fan on top, 1 120mm exhaust fan in back, and that new 120mm intake fan on the side of the case blowing air right onto the heatsink which is good too because it keeps the heatsink cooled even more. The first 3 fans are connected to my motherboard and I set them on the lower air flow setting for the noise, and the new tricool side fan I am getting is going to be set on medium.

PWM means that there is a 4th wire that carries a 5v signal from mb to fan. That signal runs from 0 - 100% "duty," or 0 - 100% of the time. The signal is read by the circuitry in the fan, which controls the speed of the fan.

If prefer PWM fans. In my previous build and this one I have the MB signalling to three fans -- two on the CPU and one intake that feeds air to the CPU -- that are controlled by the mb, speeding up as the cpu heats up.

On this build I have in addition to the above two PWM fans responding to "system" temps, the Z87 chip. No fan controller needed.

Fan controllers sometimes operate by doing PWM on the 12v line. Some fans buzz when you do that to them. The only way to really know what your controller is doing is to measure the Voltage with a Voltmeter. The only way to avoid the problem is to use a potentiometer.

thanks all for the help. I went ahead and got an Antec Tricool fan because it has a speed switch on it and I am just going to set it on the lowest setting as an intake fan. Again, I am only doing this to equalize the air pressure inside and outside the case for the dust and it's only a bonus that it happens to also push cool air right onto my Evo 212 heatsink.
