FSB speed effect on CPU performance @ the same CPU speed?

Thread Starter
so lets say

7 x 500FSB = 3.5GHz
10 x 350FSB = 3.5Ghz

a 43% FSB OC!..

i am sure the first config is faster, but by how much? is it noticeable in day to day computing and in gaming?

I'm interested in this answer as well. On my 3820 the FSB affects other settings but I would like to know that if I assumed the FSB could be changed completely independent, how much a big difference like in OP is noticeable in performance.
Why don't you try? But i think this also causes very strange numbers in ram and so on also can all cpu's / mb run 500FSB? Haswell max i think is 300

@omari: It really depends on the usage circumstances. If you run processor-intensive tasks that don't access memory much, then you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference. On the other hand, because a higher FSB will increase memory speed without a change in divisor, memory-intensive tasks should improve in performance. If you are blessed with a very high speed SSD, such as one of those PCI-E card varieties that can overate at unholy speeds, storage intensive tasks might improve in performance as well (as more information would need to move along the bus from storage to memory & CPU).

I think socket 775 shows that higher fsb speed offers greater preformance without upping clock speeds .. also why the e8400 @ 3.0Ghz with a 1333Mhz fsb was so long lived vs a cpu at the same clock speed running 800-1066Mhz fsb

well i hope your sure about that cause i am @ FSB 1700Mhz (425Mhz x 8) right now biggrin.gif

i could've reached FSB 2000Mhz but my PC2-6400 can't go above ~930Mhz @ 2.2v

I am a firm believer in high fsb clocks vs high multi clocks. Computer will run much smoother/snappy with a higher bus/fsb. I had that board and ran a e8400 andq9550 in ot and they would oOverclock like a raped ape. If you want to take a look at my bios settings for that I have them somewhere... I can tell you if I had that set up again I would push to 3.6 on lower multi on 2200+ bus. It will run well. But I don't remember tooo much from that as I recently got my 2600k to 4.8ghz =D ... then I never looked back at 775 again. Though if you want I got a qx9650 for sale.. smile.gif

the problem is that i cannot increase the DRAM speed past 930Mhz since it's a PC2-6400, otherwise i would've done FSB 2000+
