[Q] Thinking of going from 3930k to 4820

Hi,

Basically, I have zero need for 12 threads. I play League of Legends (lolol) and browse forums.

Max I can run the 3930k 24/7 is 4.8Ghz @ 1.42v. If I can get a 4820 that does 5Ghz at reasonable voltage (eventually), would it be worth the side grade?

It would be a trade, so no money out of pocket. I might actually make money. Already have a RIVE. I'm just interested in the better mem controller and higher clockspeeds of a user binned chip.

So would you do it or nah?

Note: I'm not upgrading socket till first DDR4 Enthusiast platform (Skylake or whatever they call it).

Id say its a good call. I mean, you wont notice the slightest difference in light workloads/the tasks your mention.
If we use IvyBridge as a overclocking predictor, a 5ghz chip is going to be quite rare. 4.7-4.8ghz is quite good, more common, and suitable for your purposes. (Keep in mind that with the slight IPC increase 4.8 Ivy=5.0 sandy).

But, you should be able to pocket ~$150-200 in the transaction, which is always nice smile.gif

If you enable the C States and use offset voltage on that 3930K you will barely be saving any money compared to running the 4820 with the same power saving features.

As for better Memory speeds, its a gamble and useless performance gains, much less real world performance gain compared to an additional 4 threads that the 3930K has.

I wouldnt do it, unless of course you make some profit on the exchange and the money is worth more than the 4 threads wink.gif

Oh I'm not worried about power savings whatsoever. I simply wanted to trade my 4.8Ghz 3930k for a used proven 5ghz capable 4820. I was more after higher clock speeds. And trust me 4 threads on top of 8 does not help net browsing or league of legends whatsoever. I can play that on a single core lol.
