7970 Ghz enough for 1440p?

Is a 7970 ghz, specifically this one - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-204-MS

Enough for 1440p gaming? I was going to hold off and pick up a 9970 and a 1440p korean monitor for battlefield 4, but at £260 it seems like a huge bargain.

Is it capable or should I wait for the 9970?

Keep in mind, you can pick up a 7970 for ~$300USD atm. the 9970 is most likely going to start at around $550-660.

So yes, the performance will be much better (reports suggest ~30%), but at roughly double the price.

Also, to answer your question, i think you would be pleased with 7970 performance @ 1440p. Ive had no performance issues with my 680 at the same resolution, which is 6-8% slower than a 7970.

OP you can expect HD 9970 to be priced at £500 . at £260 that MSI HD 7970 is a steal. this Sapphire HD 7970 OC is also a good deal at £275.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/b008v25ewi/geizhals07-21/ref=nosim?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

if you are waiting the HD 9950 might be the card to get. should come in at £400. using the same Hawaii chip HD 9950 should provide 90 - 95% of the performance of HD 9970 and overclock to the same max clock range with voltage overclocking. also for 1440p the extra performance is very useful. so waiting for 1 - 1.5 month might be a good idea thumb.gif

Raghu is right - i was thinking of getting a 2nd 7970 for CF, but if the 9750 comes out at decent price range ~$500USD - overclocked it could be somewhere inbetween a 780 and a Titan. I'll probably see whats in store the next couple months.

But to answer your question - yes a 7970Ghz is definitely enough to power a 1440p display at 60hz, and can power 120hz for 90% of games out there, with tweaking you can get games like Splinter Cell/Tomb Raider to run at 90-100fps while still looking very good (High detail, AA off, HBAO off)

It should run it at 60fps, but after reducing some settings. You wouldn't (with a 7970) be able to play BF4 maxed out at 60fps - I can't max BF3 and keep 60fps with my 680
