Looking for GPU/Graphics Cards for a Pentium 3 machine. - Page 2

I checked the manual for the Gateway 7210 Server (not to be confused with the 7210 Laptop) and this is what it says about the slots…
Power supply:
320 W PS/2 power supply

Expansion slots:
Four 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI slots,
Two 32-bit, 66 MHz PCI slots,
One ISA slot

At this point I’ve given up on the idea of using this Gateway 7210 Server to create a GPU Cluster to do serious number crunching since it’s just not built for it and the software necessary for that type of task isn’t compatible with Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server. At the very least this will remain a legacy machine that will be responsible for helping me retrieve files created a decade ago (happens once in a while) and as a backup storage device for my office here at home. I’m still planning on maxing out the hot-swap hard-drive bays.
I still want a graphics card for this machine because I want more than the 800px by 600px screen resolution that the mother boards is able to handle. It might seem like a minor thing to want to use more of the monitor’s real estate.

Which brings me to my original question – how does someone find which video card is right for their machines. I want a graphics card to fit one of the aforementioned slots, most likely the 32-bit, 66 MHz PCI slot. Is there an on-line tool or chart that would help?

Meanwhile I'm going to check on the aforementioned cards in this thread. Thanks a billion for what you guys have said and done so far.

fastest pci card is an HD5450, but the slow pci bus will really bottleneck it so its gonna perform only about 2/3 of its potential compared to using a pci-e slot.
may I ask why you want to make a gpu cluster?

For older cards like that you'll have to troll some OLLLD sites.
I think the 5450 is really what consensus has boiled down to be the best for that socket.

Of course you can ask because if I told you guys you might have some insight.

From as far back from my Computer Animation Years I’ve been fascinated at faster and more powerful rendering tools. There are periods of time when I was more interested in the tools then the finished work. I’ve spent a lot of time learning a wee bit about networking and computer building and modification and other tools. One of my favorite pastimes with friends of mine is totally geeking out on what we could build and do with it after we’re done.

I’ve always wanted to build a supercomputer for digital art work, and in this case I want to see if I can do it.

Also call it "The Fisk Curse" - My dad, grandfather and great grandfather have been innovators who have build things just because they could, and then found a use for them later.

I'm thinking that, instead of all of this, spend $50 to get yourself a C2D / C2Q machine that will perform 10x better than that pentium 3. As well as support those resolutions you want off the motherboard.

Don't even bother with it... let it to pasture after a decade. Any money spent on it is just being thrown away.

A quadcore ARM processor in the latest smartphones provide more performance.
Once again...

In that case you can do what I did and keep your old cpus as a render farm.
I edit videos on my FX6100, then have my old phenom quadcore render the finished scene while I continue to edit the next scene with the FX6100.
Any dualcore would be fast enough to help render, as Ive also used my dualcore APU to help render if I need to rush work.
Although a pentium III would be useless for adobe after effects. What program do you use for animation?

Yep, you're right that I need to look for after I'm done maxing out the 7210 Server. I'm also thinking of making this GUP cluster machine an open cabinet/Wall mounted computer.

Yea, it’s over 10 years old and it should been let go recently; but each time I’ve actually given it away – three times – it’s come back to me since I have the person I turned it over to return it if they can’t dispose of it properly.

Fact is that restoring and refurbishing this unit is more like a hobby, like restoring a new car or furniture. I’ve learned a lot about other aspects of computers out there in the meantime and my wife and I have agreed that so long as the bills are paid and we’ve already put money into savings/retirement and I don’t spend too much I’m free to keep at this.

I’ve always known or believed that somewhere out there in the world that there were warehouses full of obsolete parts that didn’t sell because of something else was released and customers weren’t interested in anymore. It’s just a matter of finding out where those parts are and put them to use.

And like I said earlier, it’s “The Fisk Curse” I want to max this thing out just because I can even if it makes sense to nobody else. Just because I can do something doesn’t mean I should. It’s a momentary distraction from the other things in my life.

That was the original idea - I wanted to set up a couple of sever racks in the basement and add to them when needed and I had the funds. I’m actually in the process of setting up additional outlets next to the circuit box in the basement for a more modern server that can handle modern Adobe Creative Suite files and the large and medium format printers.

We’re also setting up the corner of the basement designated for our “print shop” to look a wee more professional and not just a sterile corner of a concrete rectangle hole in the dirt.

Back in the day I used to create animations using LightWave 3D until I switched to Graphic Design and some website building and I’ve put all my efforts into “mastering” most of the programs in Adobe Creative Suite. Currently I’m dabbling in fractal generating software and perhaps other abstract digital art programs to create backgrounds and textures for some of my work.

What other programs do you use?
