But i am a sad panda now. It's got Elpida.. and afaik that's baaaaaaaad news.

Good news is, the core is doing very good.

I'm using the skyn3t LN2 BIOS (rev3 as it's for elpida).

Running +100mV (1.200v load? I was expecting more..) and 110% power limit.
Core is now testing at 1333Mhz and seems fine so far in Valley which is my initial testing program. I am pushing a extra 13Mhz every 10 minutes of loop till it either artifacts or crashes.
Then i'll test 1 or 2 steps of 13Mhz lower in other tests to see if it stabilizes.

So far still no sign of artifacts on 1333Mhz even on just 1.20v load.

EDIT: Ok, 1346Mhz artifacts in Valley and 1333 artifacts in 3dMark Fire Strike.
1320Mhz so far seems to be working.

As for Aux, what use does it have?

EDIT2: Ok, it's worse then I thought.. These Elpida chips will not do +200 no matter what voltage i slam into them. +100 orso is the max I can get on like, 1.70v.. 1.60v I can barely make it to +80 without artifacting...

I never knew how bad elpida chips were before all this info in the thread. Msi really handicapped their flagship 780 card with this crap. As for Aux, I'm not sure if there is much benefit from altering that. Others may have a different experience though.

Based on current prices, it actually is a pretty reasonable comparison, while the cheapest 290's are currently hovering around $500 for reference and $550-$580 for non-reference (again IF you can find them).

Regardless of synthetic benchmarks and hash-rates, I feel that my overall gaming experience has been MUCH improved over the crossfire 280x's I came from while using even one 780. While my other 780 was actually working, the performance was insane when SLI'ed. Not only have I had far fewer problems since upgrading, overclocking a Lightning is infinitely more fun and interesting than a 280x. I'm currently at 1290 core and +325 memory stable at 1.195 volts. Temps stay around 68-69 deg C under load since ambient temp is usually around 24 deg C where I am, and that's without my case fans cranked up.

I've decided to go ahead and go under water in the next few weeks, and I'll be grabbing two EK Lightning gpu blocks, EK Supremecy cpu block, a 420mm x 45mm width radiator, and a 280mm x 60mm radiator for cooling. I'm still deciding on a pump and reservoir, but I'm leaning towards a combo unit due to space constraints. Pretty excited I must say!

I got a great deal on my lightning also at 450 after rebate. The lightning plus full cover water block was almost the same as a reference 290 at the time that I was looking. It sounds like you are coming over to the dark side (water cooling).thumb.gif There are a lot of different options there. I have been extremely impressed with my EK block. I can't recall ever seeing my vrm temps over 31c. I need to resist the urge to sli mine right now. But, I already have an EVGA 1300 watt PSU on the way. I would need something to really try it out.wink.gif Every time that I feel that I have scratched that upgrade itch and should be satisfied for a long while, it keeps coming back. Argh.

I don't get it. Has anyone actually shown side by side comparisons of benchmarks with Overclocked Hynix compared to unoverlocked Hynix and the same with Elpida? I don't think it makes that much difference.

This is Bishop's run @ 1358/ +600 Memory

My card @ 1440/ +350 memory

I know this is Valley, but when you start reaching higher clocks on these cards 1250Mhz+ you really need memory capable of hitting 1700Mhz+ to really see good scaling.I have tested 7 current gen games and scaling without increasing the memory clocks is garbage. 1700Mhz or higher is not common on Elpida memory, which is why is sucks and MSI should take our cards back and exchange them for Hynix ones..... tongue.gif

How do I find out how many MHz my Memory runs at? It displays 3300 currently, which isn't right. Do I need to divide it by two or what?

I think it probably matters more so in benchmarks. I have been able to get about the same score in benchmarks i.e. at 1300 or 1334 core with higher memory overclocks vs higher core clocks i.e. 1360 or more plus lower memory clocks. I was also reading a Lightning review at HardOCP that compared the Lightning to the Galaxy HOF. They were able to hit a higher overclock on the Lightning memory which they attributed to allowing them to go x8 AA in a game like Hitman Absolution vs the HOF x4 AA. I'm sure that your mileage may vary though. I was mainly commenting on how odd it was that MSI seemed to deck the card out with the best components until it got to the memory. Maybe due to supply constraints who knows. It just seems that when you pay for a Lightning. You are paying for the best is all.

Ah, I see. Can anyone tell me whether or not the Hynix revisions of Skyn3t's BIOS are compatible with Elpida? Do they just have Hynix support or are they Hynix only?

I believe that he said the timings were different for elpida vs hynix. I don't believe that you would get any benefit from the hynix bios if you had elpida if I understand correctly.

How do you get actual screenshots of your run? When I tried to do a screen shot, it was just a blank screen. I guess that memory clocks do make a bit of difference at 1250 or 1300 +.
