That is sort of what I figured. Thanks for the confirmation. By the way, what sort of voltage were you pushing to get 1500 +?

So guess who said "its time to switch teams", and whipped out the credit card? ME! I think I will end up putting the stock cooler back on the 7970 and let it find a new home. I will formally join sometime in the next few days, but i wanted to go ahead and say HI, so i would be subscribed. I am going to do some back reading in this thread as well to get a feel as to overclocking potential/demands on air and water.

Welcome! I was originally looking for a 290, but the dang lite coiners had driven the prices through the roof. tongue.gif I have been extremely satisfied with the Lightning though. Cheaper than a 7970? Insanity.

My Lightning doesn't seem to have much problem running with the Classifieds. The highest that I have pushed has been 1450 on the core. Ftw 420 has definitely hit higher though using extreme cooling I believe. It looks like you have same motherboard as me too. How is the OC formula treating you? It has by far been the best motherboard that I have ever owned. My only issue is everything reverts back to stock if it is disconnected from the wall power supply for a significant length of time. I should get around to replacing the motherboard battery and see if that clears it up.

Full watercooling hands down! thumbsupsmiley.png Hoevito has already come to the dark side. biggrin.gif My PS3 can be louder than my whole computer playing games all day with clocks to the max. It feels good spending literally half the price of a Titan and getting that performance and much more possibly when overclocked thanks to watercooling.

Warning:AMD Partner Price Gouging Rants (Click to show)
I paid less than $300 for my 7970, there is NO WAY I am going to pay a 50%+ premium for aging tech. I dont see mining going away (nor do I wish to), so a switch to the "Value Leader in Gaming", a.k.a. "NVidia", seems like a natural choice for a gamer rig.

Yes...I just called NVidia a value brand.

I am still in shock that a D.D.7970 is pricier than a 780 lightning

I should call my buddy in N.E. Georgia, and ask him if the pigs on his farms have grown wings or something...

I have made it about 15 pages through the thread...but I have to ask... questions

1.Do we need to flash vBios to get a good overclock on water?
2. Who makes the best full cove block for it?
3. Are we able to control mem voltage?
4.Did they continue with the Elpidia or did MSI wake up and slap some HYNIX in?

This will be my first NVidia card since.... NV18...

Yeeeeeeah...just hit 11k Firestrike on a single card biggrin.gif

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/2312723

*Edit*

A tad bit higher now...1380 core and 1752 mem. Score now 11234

Now here's the kicker...I can clock each card well over 1300 core easily now, but when sli is activated they crash back into windows at pretty much any speeds over stock now. It's weird because on the stock bios, I can rev them both up to 1300+ (one will boost stable up to 1340 and the other hangs around 1310) and they can run any benchmark successfully EXCEPT Firestrike. Just to test my power supply out a bit to try and rule it out, I completed a few burn in tests in Furmark with sli active and passed with flying colors.

I thought the issue may be with the bios, so I flash the LN2 versions for each card next and tested them out. The voltage does seem to sync a lot better now between the two, whereas with the Skynet stock bios version, one card was always a full tenth of a volt lower than the other. Weirdly enough now, when I overclock them no matter if the settings or set or synced independently, if I run a bench the display will crash for up to 10-15 seconds...but then it will resume, but the overclock and all settings are lost and it's back to stock. I have no idea what's with all the weird behavior...and hours of trial and error with settings/voltages hasn't helped so far...

My reference bios was boosting solidly to 1375, and my flashed bios was stuck at 1375 on its run. Both were run with the memory at + 800. The score is the exact same for both. As I said earlier, the regular bios must be boosting a bit past what you are doing on the ln2 bios. On another interesting note, my stock bios once hit 116% power target. The highest my flashed bios has ever hit was around 110 or so. That was with the core at 1450. ???

Okay sounds awesome, but then i better try to reach my goal on the stock bios. But my experience with the power limit is that max on stock is 114% and max on LN2 is 140%.
Also what Vcore you use for those clocks, i just can't seem to get a stable 1200MHz at all, and everybody here is talking like at least 1300.

My lightning runs fine with +110 (1202) on the core with +500 (7000) on memory. No voltage increase. Here is the kicker, I start to see artifacts when I increase the core clock to +130 with no voltage increase. I now started testing voltage increases and run heaven again, still seeing artifacts. I tried +6, +12, +19, +25 with no difference in the artifacts. I also noticed that the voltage is not changing at all, the core voltage is not going above 1.158. Need to flash to a skynet bios? Using afterburner beta 18.

do you hit the 109% barrier when using the 25mV?

Okay, then you should just give it some more voltage i think, thats normally when the artifacst starts to kick in, then the core needs more voltage, just try giving it +50mV and see if it goes away, just make sure you check your temps smile.gif
