1. I am not sure if the middle fan spins up before Windows or not to be honest, as the PC is on the floor in a tight spot. I'll have to check. Another thing I still need to try is to flip it to the LN2 BIOS and see if that makes a difference.
2. Yes, I've tried the Lightning fan tool. It only goes as low as 30% and is still loud. When I turn it up to 100%, you can definitely hear more noise.
MSI is suggesting I RMA the card and says they believe the fan is bad. However, I am very reluctant to do that since I'm afraid I'll get another refurbed card back that could have other issues (plus this card has Hynix memory). Here are the options I'm considering:
Option #1: Unplugging the middle fan. Thoughts? I don't believe I will try overclocking it higher than the stock overclock.
Option #2: Scouring the forums of most major sites and see if anyone who has replaced their default Lightning cooler with a water block would be willing to sell me their old cooler so I can swap the fans out.
Option #2 is what I am exploring now. No hits on Anandtech so far, but I'll check Hardforums as well and I'll look here to see if there is a FS/FT forum and maybe post. Otherwise, if anyone here has their original MSI cooler laying around and you remember the middle fan being pretty quiet, PM me and maybe we can work out a sale.
Unless MSI can guarantee me my repaired card back or a new card in exchange, I don't think I want to risk an RMA. This card gets a decent ASIC score and has Hynix memory. I don't want to risk exchanging it for some refurbed card that may not be as good or worse, have to be RMAed again. I'd like to try to replace the middle fan so I'm looking for anyone selling their original MSI Lightning cooler or their middle fan (assuming it is quiet).
