about the motherboard.
does it have a extra PCI-e power header?

my Asrock motherboard has a extra molex header on the mobo for SLI , so the motherboard gets extra power from PSU.

I already connected mine , even without SLI.
because these cards are pretty heavy duty.,

check the mobo and PSU.
and check your voltages (12v, 5v, 3,3v)

Just remember to keep an eye on it, don't want an end 'sweating' off & wrapping up in one of the fans. Electric tape seems to lose stickiness with temp & humidity changes.

The tape should be fine. because I took apart the fitting there is a base plastic part and then a couple of metal covers. The tape goes under the metal covers in most places so even if it looses it stick, it will not come off and get into the fans, might just look a mess.

I found that the MSI 300% plimit bios allowed me to clock higher. However... It is quite different to Skyn3t's bios and Skyn3t will give you better benchmark scores.

The 300% bios has boost and this causes it to adjust the core speed all the time. This is same with the standard MSI bioses. It means that although you set the frequency to 1400MHz the card will not run at this in reality. With Skyn3t's bios if you set the core to 1400 then it will be fixed and run at 1400 all the time.

In my opinion, Skyn3t's bios is the best for benching. While the MSI bioses are best for day-to-day use.

Yea its plugged in as well. PSU is a 1600w Lepa that pushes 1700w before it will die, figured that'd be a safe bet. Just wish I could push these alittle more, still to me feels like MSI is dropping the ball to much, EVGA and Galaxy kinda kicking their ***...

you can disable boost by setting "base clock ","boost clock", and "boost limit" at the same speed .

so you can put the ROM of te 300% Plimit bios in Kepler bios tweaker tool v1.25

then set those 3 numbers the same.

check skyn3ts bios in Kepler bios tweaker tool 1.25 too.
then you see what I mean.

Ah ok thats interesting.

I have finished benching my Lightnings for a bit now. I feel I reached the limit while they are air cooled and am eagerly awaiting EK's promised full cover blocks.
When I can get the cards water cooled I will try for more.

My best clocks for all benchmarks are at about 1380 core with Skyn3t's bios and +200 voltage (1.32 measured - drops to about 1.29 when under full load)
I know there is more in these cards - 1400 - 1450 under water is my hope. I feel that the card in general is just getting too warm on air now - not quite sure where specifically as the monitored temps look ok, but more voltage just makes things less stable which makes me think heat somewhere.

EK said blocks would be available 1st half of Sept, but we have not seen them yet and no updates either.

So reflashed them again with Skyn3t's bios again and had to lower the clocks to +225 +200 and abit more juice but it did however up the numbers on Valley abit.

This is the same card as before x1 card, same drivers except the Bios. Also tried the updated Phsyx and no change in score really.

Still can't decide if I should keep them or not lol.. Havent even did a SLI bench yet.

yeah, you are right.

you got nice scores on Air , best is to wait for water cooling blocks .
it will be better for the VRM too I guess .

i am planning on doing the same thing.

I see alot of people saying they will be returning the Lightning or have done so already. I'm thinking about this myself seeing mine isnt stable in games anywhere over 1202mhz with the 1.2v limit. My HOF does 1293 - 1306mhz completely stable in all games at 1.2v so I'm not impressed with the chip I have.

On what terms do you go about asking the retailer to return the cards?

I got mine from Scan.co.uk and already had a bad experience with them when I wanted to return a Gigabyte 560Ti SoC that was crashing in EVERY game without fail. They blabbed on the drivers were the fault and I should wait for them to be updated. Thats a pretty bad excuse. Fought with them for 6 weeks before they gave me a refund. Only purchased my Lightning from them as they were the only ones who had it in stock.

So yeh how do I go about returning a card that doesnt have any faults but doesnt perform as well as I was expecting? I know some of you have already returned them or even thinking about it.

Not sure tbh would be my first time as well. Although I know my boards been throwing codes @ me randomly but I think its part of the G1 sniper 5 lineup issues atm from looks of it. Stupid code's lock the board until I hard reboot it alot.

Although... Just swapped to SLI and it starts Firestrike with freaking 20-30 fps?... no clue ***'s going on but if that keeps up they are certainly going back...

Why??
I still can not overclock them (SLI) because of my power supply, but i can play most of my games at max settings (2560x1440),and it's very very nice.
My first plan was not to be the first in some benchmarks scores, but to be ready for all the next games and specially at 2560x1440p.
Edit.Keep them. thumb.gif
