8GB Ram Upgrade 2010 MBP.. interesting problem

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
Good evening, I am wondering if anyone has ran into this issue before and could help me sort it out.

I have a 2010 13" Macbook Pro and I am upgrading the memory.

This is the RAM I bought - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231294

I know it's not Crucial or the "official" Mac brands but I did my research, read reviews, and the RAM works.

HOWEVER, this is my issue.

These are the following combinations that I put my old 2GB sticks and my new 4GB sticks in. Both old sticks are working fine so I will denote the new sticks as "a" or "b" because there are two.

slot A - 2GB & slot B - 4GB (a) ---> boots as 6GB memory
slot A - 2GB & slot B - 4GB (b) ---> boots as 6GB memory
slot A - 4GB (a) & slot B - 2GB ---> boots as 6GB memory
slot A - 4GB (b) & slot B - 2GB ---> boots as 6GB memory

slot A - 4GB (a) & slot B - 4GB (b) ---> doesn't boot, wheel spins for 10 seconds then freezes
slot A - 4GB (b) & slot B - 4GB (a) ---> doesn't boot, wheel spins for 10 seconds then freezes

What's up with that? Do I need to enable something in my settings?

Thanks for any help.

Apple forums just tell me to return and get official Apple RAM lol. Unfortunately that may be the only solution.

I doubt you will get a lot of help from anybody on here, mac computers are frowned upon usually it would seem. i dont know if there is a bios, but you could check it out, i've never heard of "official apple ram" so idk lol`

That's an odd issue. Is yours the unibody or aluminum model?

According to the Macrumors wiki it shows the 15"+ model being listed as supporting 8 GB, don't see a mention of the 13" on the chart. There's a chance it might still work, maybe through a firmware upgrade or the like.

Have you tried resetting the SMC controller?

Here's the link: Resetting Intel-based SMC Controller

I'm pretty limited when it comes to Mac's, if you want someone who would be the "Mac" guru on this forum hit up Lord Xeb thumb.gif

How about certified 3rd party RAM?
I got a 8GB Corsair DDR3-1333 kit for 50 a few months back. Worked off the bat once seated properly.
