I'm building a projector-based HTPC around a non-RAID 15TB video collection.

With about 9TB loaded so far (now on the 3rd Seagate ST4000DM000), 8 files lost/partially recovered out of 2200 DVD-Rs and another 4 weeks to go the importance of speed of access over permanence has made its case as far as I'm concerned.

So now I'm thinking about backup once the collection is loaded.

I've worked out that the larger the drive capacity the lower will be the overall cost but how low can I afford to get with the specification in terms of long term reliability?

For example, could I settle for 3TB W/D Reds or should I be looking at the enterprise parts in 4TB W/D SE?
