HD 4890, old dog dying?

Hello, I recently got a HD 4890 Vapor X this model for like 20$ bucks and I`m having some trouble with it.

Originally it has a 1050mhz memory clock speed and it seems it can`t run at this speed anymore. I use Metrol LL as testing because even at start it is GPU intensive. In other less intensive games it crashes after a while.

Whenever i launch Metro with 1050mhz memory speed the game either freezes right from the start or starts artifacting with some crazy double rainbow action. If I reduce the speed to 1000mhz the game+other titles run just fine.

And some weird things:
  • furmark can run with no problem at 1050mhz without crashing
  • loading a new youtube video page will cause my monitor to flicker once, this happens at any ram speed but by disabling Hardware Acceleration in the flash settings the problem goes away
  • CPU (G1610) load is over the place when loading a HD video on youtube, no problem with movie files
  • Metro doesn`t crash or artifact if I turn up the gpu fan speed to 100% before starting the game

My system is powered by this psu which doesn`t overheat or make any strange noises at load.

I have the latest drivers(13.4) for the card and I only installed the display driver and CCC.
The card idles at 54°C on the GPU with 33% fan speed and goes up to 75°C under load with 60% fan speed. Here is a AIDA64 idle screen.

So what could be the problem? Is the ram overheating so fast and can`t operate at that speed or my psu can`t handle the card?

Flash sucks, I have never had hardware acceleration be stable, and with it off your cpu is going all the work.

I would take the heat sink off the card, replace the TIM, and make sure the thermal tape on the memory isn't old and dry. They should be nice and flexible. As a warning you card will be a paperweight until you can get some new pads. I would just pull some good ones off a dead card or buy some. I have a few sheets of fujipoly XR-m and it is amazing, though any pad with a 4 W/mk or better rating will do.

ionstorm66 what do you mean by TIM? I actually changed the thermal paste with mx-4 on the gpu first when I got it because temps were in the 90s. And yea the termal pads looked kinda nasty but I have no ideea from where I can buy new thermal pads since there are none at my it providers. Also when it comes to vram maintenance I am kinda of a begginer...Is it safe to clean the ram surface with this?

nz3777 I would tell you but I sold my 23'' TN panel because I want to get the Acer H236HL at the start of september and now I`m using my very first crt monitor (1024x768) and I guess you are not interested in this rez lol

lol no! .............. I did have a 1366x768 Vizio monitor i use to game on, at the time I didnt understand what all the fuss was about bigger resolutions but yeah now iam on 3860x1080 and i can tell you-Yeah it does make a diffence lol.
Thats ok as long as you have something to get your gamer-on I see no problem using that rez, if anything youll get yourself some xtra fps right?!

Most major computer shops should carry thermal pads. You should replace the memory pads, once they are dry/hard they don't conduct heat well anymore.
