Just put together my new rig and I'm getting some pretty disappointing temps.
It seems to idle at about 35c, and it reaches 85c while running IBT. This is at stock speed.
The block is mounted correctly, and the backplate is facing the proper direction (a common mistake). I used a rice grain-sized amount of MX4.
I understand Haswell runs hot, but 85c at stock speeds sounds a little extreme.
Doing some googling, I found out that a lot of people have had issues with the H100i's backplate being too loose. They've been able to get temperature drops of 15-20c just by adding rubber spacers to the backplate.
I have these spacers that came with my case. I'm pretty sure they're meant for fans. Do you guys think it would be a good idea to reseat the block using the spacers, or are these temps actually normal?
Check the voltages in the bios mate, with my 4670k and GIGABYTE Z87X-OC I found that they were much too high by default. and my temps would rocket as soon as I did anything even slightly demanding. Running a Thermaltake 2.0 water cooler with the processor at 4.2 ghz I never see temps go over 65 degrees, you should get better due to the h100i having a 240 radiator
Just finished reseating the block with the rubber spacers.
The spacers inserted onto the backplate.
Backplate installed---absolutely solid, no wiggling whatsoever.
New paste applied
Here's the backplate after the block is completely installed. Notice how squished the spacers are; this is pretty much what I was looking for. That means there's great contact.
RESULTS
Before
Idle: 35-40c
Load: 84-86c
After
Idle: 30-36c
Load: 70-79c
Conclusion: It helped enough to make it worthwhile, but it's still pretty hot for stock speeds.
I think I'll try forcing the fans to run at 100% in the bios, just to see if they're the issue...
EDIT: Forcing the fans to 100% doesn't help since they're running at 100% during full load anyway. I'm running Prime95 now and temps are under 70c, hovering somewhere around 65c.
