Java Web Development Server Build Recommendations

Thread Starter
So I am starting a new project and I need a development server to host my website and database. I've built plenty of desktops before but never a server, so I am not really sure how much I should spend and what I should get.

I am probably going to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux or some other Linux distro and host a fairly cpu and memory intensive RIA site using Spring or some other Java web framework. I will also be hosting a potentially large MongoDB or similar database. I'd like the server to be able to handle up to maybe 300 simultaneous users. This server would be hosting a site with a limited number of users just for research and development, the public site would be hosted using an external provider. I figure I would need somewhere around 5 or 6 terrabytes of formatted space and 12GB or 16GB of RAM.

So, I have a rough idea of what specs I might need but that's about it. I am not sure if $1200 would be quite enough to fit my requirements. I've put together a couple different builds on paper from parts I've looked at on newegg and amazon, etc.

I've looked around at some of the CPU's out there and a few that caught my eye are the Xeon E5-2407, Xeon E5-2609, Opteron 4280, and the Opteron 6320.

5-6TB of space for a development server? You storing video or something? Anyway, hit eBay and get a Dell C1100; you'll get a lot of kit (more than you need) for ~$400, and you can always throw in the storage you need and boot the OS from a USB stick.

Yeah, I thought about it a little bit more and I realized I really dont need much in performance or hard drive space. I was way over-estimating what type of requirements I had. I also got a really good deal on a dual socket F board, 2x AMD Opteron 2419 (1.8Ghz 6-core), 16GB of DDR2 ecc ram in 8 dimms, a 400 watt server psu, and 2x SAS 15k drives. I bought them all together from someone else's previous build on another forum, so I know that they'll be compatible. Only cost $150.

I do have to buy a case and possibly cooling for it as well. I'd also like to add more storage space. The motherboard is a Tyan board that can be found here: link.

Here's a few things I am thinking about adding to it:
2 of these: Seagate Cheetah 15k SAS drives
A case: Fractal Design Define XL R2

I might also throw in a 1TB green drive in there too. What do you think about those refurb drives? They're so cheap, it seems worth the risk.

Oh wow, I just checked out those Dell 1100's, those things are crazy good deals! My build will still end up a little bit cheaper though, perhaps not as good as specs either.

Those drives are a good price actually. If I was in the market for 15K SAS, I'd pull the trigger on them biggrin.gif C1100s the best bang-for-buck servers on any market right now. It looks like a lot of them were used in server farms in DCs, and they're being retired en masse.

It would have been a lot easier to just buy a pre-assembled server, that's for sure.

What do you think of the components I posted? Is there a cheaper case that will fit that board, support 6+ drives, and comes with fans?
What type of performance can I expect from this setup?

The C1100 is a hell of deal at the moment. If I could justify a use for them, I'd get my director to buy a load, but we have ample server space and I am trying to keep the infrastructure I designed as virtualised as possible.

Get a C1100 and put some 2 or 3TB seagate constellation CS or ES's in it.

For your purposes, what you've bought should be more than enough, since it's only for development. No point spending oodles just for a dev. server. biggrin.gif

Well the board, ram, cpus, hdds, and psu came today. Everything looks good but I am still stuck on finding the right case. It seems like I am going to have to stick to the 1U form factor so I can use the PCI-e riser card and the 1U psu.
