Weird / normal temps and clocks on crossfire 7970's?

Hey guys.....as of about two days ago I finally got my new computer going. ( love this thing btw! ) And I have a set of the Sapphire 3GB Dual-x 7970's running in CFX and the clock speeds and heat difference is a little confusing to me. I seriously haven't had a new competdent gaming rig since 2005....not kidding. So this new machine , running cfx is totally alien to me.

I'm on my old rig right now because I have to tranfer a bunch of stuff over , but if I post some pics of my overdrive , and some GPU-Z shots of what I have these things running at....can you check them out? The heat difference is only about 5-6c ( sitting on firefox temps are 40c and 45C ) , but......

1 card seems to be clocked really high , while the other one is really low?
The one card that is running extra warm is also running at 99% as soon as I open anything.....like firefox for example. I mean anything , including GPU-z.

Should I have my crossfire enabled in the AMD overdrive at all times? I don't want to burn my cards up and I think there is something out of whack.

BTW...before you answer.....please note that I am truley new to this , and I don't understand some things. I'm learning.

OH....I am running the latest beta 13.8 drivers.

The reason there is a temperature difference is that there is no room for the top GPU to suck in air, as the second card is blocking it. This is a normal response in this situation and if your temperatures are at safe levels you don't need to worry.

I dont think any card, top or otherwise, should be running at 99% at all times - especially if its doing normal desktop rendering.

If it starts at 99% then goes back down after you open up something like Firefox, then thats kinda normal - but if its constantly at load, and the temps are going past 65C then that might be a problem.

But if both cards are sitting at 45 and 40C outside of games, thats fine. If they both hit 100% and one is a good 5-10C warmer than the other, then thats normal too.

You normally cant hit high overclocks while in CF since the airflow/cooling is much worse for the top card, and the ambient case temp will be a lot higher than with just 1 card.

Thanks for the input so far guys. After all the reading and so forth I've done , I was expecting a good 5 - 10c difference in heat between the two cards. What's bothering me is the one card running full tilt at 99%. It goes up to 99% as soon as I open anything....and it just stays there. I can hear the fans rev up to full speed and in the AMD Catalyst program when I look at both the cards , it shows it running at 99%.

Has anyone running the newer 13.8 versions drivers experienced this? These are the first drivers these cards have used , as the computer has only been running for about 3 days now. I actually un-hooked the thing and plugged in my old rig until I can find a solution.

Tomorrow evening when I get home I'll run some tests. What should I be posting screenshots of besides GPU-z ?

Ya 99% at all times even in Windows is not normal - i wonder if ULPS is the problem, have you tried disabling it?

Use TriXXX or Afterburner instead of overdrive for your overclocking utility.

Thanks for the info on the AMD catalyst issue! Tonight when I get home from work I'll DL MSI afterburner and try using that instead of the catalyst program. I'm thinking the driver is fine , it just doesn't work together so well with catalyst I guess?
