Running 2 video cards - Page 3

Well, I didn't want to say it because I didn't want to sound like a jerk and it may be a little offtopic.gif ... but it's true. You could use a new rig.

You could get a new rig with a I5 -3570k or haswell for about 30% more performance in ipc and FPS. The I5-750 is still a great cpu and most new games are still GPU bound more than CPU.

To give you an example: I have a 3 core phenom 2.8ghz stock I threw in a HTPC just for some light gaming/movies and got curious what one of my 7950 would do in it. I could still max out 90% of the games over 60 fps I play @ 1920x1080. I couldn't believe it so I unlocked it to 4 and overclock to about 3.4 and I really didn't need it at all. Just a little FPS jump.

Anyway, the point is your cpu is stronger than a PII 720 x3 and if you throw in a new gpu, you would see a huge improvement. Don't let all these guys with there large e-peen system let you waist your money if your still want to wait to upgrade. You should really wait till a CPU can give 50% or more of an upgrade to be financially viable for the best bang for your money throughout the years of upgrades

Now if you are playing nothing but a game like SC2 all the time.....Might have to rething upgrading your CPU.
Just food for thought IMHO

Why are people saying his cards won't work, when they might if the PSU has enough PCI-E connectors ?
BUT the end result won't be more performance...

I say this because our ancient AMD PC has a 7000 (?) and an 8800 GTS 320Mb to drive three monitors, two for "her" to work on and a third for watching films or TV on.

dunx

P.S. There is little wrong with the system except the PSU... and maybe the monitor.... wink.gif If he can't afford W7 then a new system is a pipe-dream. IMHO.

I'm pretty sure nvidia and AMD gpu's wont work together simultaneously.

They can - it's weird... People have combo rigs for folding or to game on a strong GPU while watching videos or managing a second screen on a cheap secondary card. Ex: GTX 680 for gaming, and a Radeon X570 for the video OR Radeon 7970 for gaming and a GT 430 for videos

I think there is a guide on how to do this in a folding thread actually...

Don't forget using an Nvidia card for PhysX

But OP, you can't put two video cards in simply to "boost" performance.

Another vote for the system overhaul

I've ran an ATI/AMD card with a Nvidia card before, and even found a hack for the physx....Nvidia turn off the physx capability if it detects an AMD card, but there is software/drivers to get around it.

Well apparently you can, but using both to render the same application causes an enormous (50%-80%) drop in the secondary cards performance, even when using it solely for physx. And many posts claim needing hacked drivers and the like.

Not to be cruel or ignorant, but there comes a point where you're so behind that you really need a total rehaul. I'd say you're at that point. You could just try both and see what happens, not like you're going to break anything expensive XD
