HELP!!! Computer got fried?? ASAP posting from iPhone. - Page 3

I have tested all parts (besides CPU) since I don't have another MOBO that is compatible. Ram/PSU/vid card/HDD all work. Seems only the MOBO got fried. Not sure how that is possible. But looks like that's all I have to replace. I have a sandy bridge i5 (assuming it didn't get fried) what MOBO should I get? Cheaper is better. Thanks for everyone's help. I will dish out +REP when I'm up and running tomorrow.

Electricity doesn't always come from the outlet. It also comes in through the modem and gets to the mobo through the network cable.

chances are, if the modem was hard wired to the PC, if the cable company got hit, it would have taken out the modem, and travelled down the network cable and into your board that way, taking out the network adapter and the rest of the board. PSU's survived because the zap didn't come down the power grid, but the data line.

Sadly that is what seemed to happen.

To everyone reading, I live 30 mins from TigerDirect. So if there is MOBO or even CPU MOBO combo for 150$ or less let me know your thoughts. I've had intel for years so in not sure about AMD.

well, amd will be slower, but it'll get you up and running

and maybe you need to invest in one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RJ-45-RJ45-Ethernet-Network-Device-Surge-Protector-Lightning-Arrester-Adapter-/400558924012?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d432c20ec wink.gif

This is what id go with from TD - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2276156&CatId=6975

Superb motherboard. I wouldnt bother buying a new cpu just yet; I bet Intel would hav it back if you spoke to them and said its not working (if you discover its not).

Yea, see if you can check your cpu first. Buying just a mb would be the solution if the cpu is okay

Sorry for your loss. Same thing happened to us a couple weeks back except that our loss was much greater. Here is what an overnight lightning storm left us with:

-Fried cable modem
-Fried wireless router
-Fried ethernet ports on 2 of the 4 computers plugged into the back of the router
-Fried mobo, speakers, and sound card (my father's setup - 1 of the 4 computers plugged into the back of the router)
-Fried laser jet printer
-Fried DVD player
-Fried sprinkler system control panel + pump start relay system (garage and outside of the house)
-Damaged/burnt siding on the southwestern part of the house which leads me to believe that our house took a direct him from the lightning

Life goes on I guess. Since you deduced that your motherboard is toast, I would just invest in a budget Z77 motherboard (or whatever you can afford) since they are backward compatible with Sandy Bridge CPU's. My father had a a fried Asrock P67 Extreme 4 and he ended up replacing with a Gigaybte Z77 UD3H.
