Partially true.
Considering how long Duke took it might have been a mess and they just wanted to release it no matter what.
However, with Aliens colonial marines they actually used funds intended for that game and put it in their own franchise (Borderlands 2)

It's a 4x game with real time elements....it's basically Civ in space with no turns, with the length of time it takes to research new tech...the pacing of fights and the unit movement, etc.

That said it's a great game, but it's definitely in its own little world because I haven't seen anyone do what they do.

In reality, all of the games mentioned save for Star Wolves and Nexus have been 4X games...though usually people say it is a stretch to consider Sins a 4X game. At least not in the league of Masters of Orion, Sword of the Stars, Space Empires...ect. However, part of being a 4X game is being a RTS or turn based strategy on some level. It is an element that must be present. So I think it is rather common for 4X games to get lumped in with other real time or turn based strategy games.

Though Sins of a Solar EMpire is typically called a RTS by the 4X gaming community since it plays very similar to Warcraft. Especially with the all the units having special abilities that you have to control (well, you can leave them to the AI, but they will be wasted most of the time). It probably would have had more of a 4X status if there had been more Diplomacy in the game, but that quest like system of "Destroy ten mining ships and we will like you" is rather dumb. After a few games I just always locked diplomacy and had teams from the beginning or a free for all.

The only games that I think really were similar to Homeworld was Space Wolves and Nexus. Homeworld was not a 4X game. You only increased you mother ship's ability and grew the size of your fleet. Star Wolves and Nexus are the only other games I've seen do that (though I will give X3 an honorable mention, but it has so much more). Even the games that are considered to be Homeworld clones didn't even do that. You always had a planet or planets as a base. Homeworld was such a hit that even now it can still make headlines...and it is what? ten years old? Maybe Twelve? I'd have to google the release date to be sure. Why was that game not copied a dozen times over? I mean when diablo became a hit we immediately had all sorts of Diablo clones...many of which I think are better than Diablo actually was and many obviously vain attempts to ride on Diablo's coat tails. I think nearly all the space strategy games are actually trying to clone Masters of Orion rather than Homeworld. It is like the Homeworld game style was nearly completely ignored save for a couple of Indy developers.

Sins of a Solar Empire followed a similar vein that Imperium Galatica and Pax Imperia did, which resulted in those games being 4X RTS / RT4X. Homeworld the game was such a hit that it had many successors and clones during that franchise's prime, but so many of them where just outright terrible that they passed under the radar and went completely forgotten. For example, Genesis Rising: The Universal Crusade, O.R.B: Off-World Resource Base, Hegemonia: Legions of Iron, Project Earth: Starmageddon, but having some issues remembering the names of the other lesser clones.

But aside from the RTS in space aspect...I don't know if any of those games other than Genesis Rising are true clones of Homeworld (forgot about that one...I never played it much due to it crashing all the time...I should revisit that. I have a feeling it just didn't like my hardware at the time.)

I think they are copies of Master of Orion with the planet colonization and asteroid claiming. Can you think of any games where you have a mother ship as a base and you upgrade from there? No society or economy to manage? Just a small fleet that you can improve? This is how I play X3 most of the time and Star wolves did this really well in my opinion. All the anime I like is like this as well...Eureka 7, Cowboy Bebop, Yammato, well really this is probably the most common form of scifi anime. I probably tend to role play the games a bit like that as well. I know I would love a game like this, but I other than Homeworld and Star wolves I don't know of any games doing this. Genesis Rising did in a way with improving the ship DNA but the story behind it kind of ruined it. I remember a a game called Darkstar one too, but that game only had you with the one ship and then would give you random upgrades throughout the game.

Loved HW1 and HW2. Cataclysm didn't really do it for me (really poor mixing on audio and the game felt stiffer than HW1 for some reason.)

Also looking forward to Descent 4, since we're talking about space games. God, I love Descent. If they can bring D4 closer to D1/D2 then I might just lock my door for 10 years and play Descent until I die.

That game.

That game.
