[technet] Microsoft buying Nokia's phone business in a $7.2 billion bid for its mobile future - Page 9

I am happy to see this. Nokia seems to work pretty well with Microsoft anyway and now they can integrate their apps directly into the OS rather than the end user having to select the better app (like their maps and camera applications).

I am kinda digging the 1020 sensory overload thumb.gif

Well that's sad. Nokia however deserved this for ditching MeeGo (though Intel deserves some blame there as well). Hopefully something good can come out of this even though I'll likely never get one of their windows phones...just too into Android.

Yeah, that phone is unbelievably good for the price. Even has IPS screen, I think it leaves cheap Android Samsungs to the dust. WP8 is very light OS, it's smooth even with 520's low clocked CPU and 512MB memory. Usually cheap phones are ugly as sin but that's not the case with Nokia. My brother has Lumia 720 and in some ways it's better than my Lumia 920, very light and has the best battery of all WP8 phones. All the Lumia models offer very good value IMO.

Had Nokia continued with the development of MeeGo, they would have had a another card in their pocket.

But when you cut your R&D, and put all your eggs in the same basket, this is what happens. :/

In real life, two negatives don't normally turn into a positive.

Now that the dust has settled a bit, these are some of the consequences:

-Nokia will continue (remember, only their phone division was bought by Microsoft), though they will now focus on telecommunication equipment and their large range of patents. Ownership of Nokia patents apparently was not part of the deal. Microsoft has however made a ten year lease deal for Nokia patents worth 1,65 billion euro. Now that Nokia no longer has a smartphone division, it may actually start acting a lot more agressive with its patents.

-Nokia as a smartphone brand will disappear. Any new smart phone in the Asha/Lumia range will no longer bear the Nokia brand. Microsoft has made a license deal to use the Nokia brand for feature phones for another ten years, but no such deal has been made for smartphones.

I am glad for this. Honestly I have been using my wife's Lumia, and the more I use WP8, the more I like it. It is definitely snappy on this limited hardware and the features/look of it is really nice. I am really thinking I like it over my 4.3 Android. Definitely impressed and hope Microsoft continues to improve on it.
