Macbook Pro Retina (13") vs iPad Retina for university/college - Page 2

Its not even a question - get the computer. If you plan on doing real work you will need the functionality of a pc/mac. In fact, for eco/mba work where you are referencing multiple spread sheets/articles/etc I really prefer having multiple screens when writing research papers. Just my .02 cents, I have written so many 20+ page research papers, when I have 20+ tabs open with multiple books I think having an ipad would make me jump out a window.

yea if I were to get the macbook Air, 128GB would be fine. Only things I'll put on it are Dota 2, SimCity and music, and of course school related files, pdfs, etc... . Besides, I have a WD MyBook Studio USB3 3TB, which i HIGHLY recommend to ANYONE who is looking to get external storage drive. This thing taps out at 130-140mbps when copying 25gb single file. CRAZY ! its faster than my 7200RPM sata2, and this is a WD GREEN inside !

^___^ agreed, however I have a seagate 3tb external, and it presses 160-(180 peak, I have a Screenshot somewhere) via usb3 single file, and 140 MB/s for multi-file transfers.

and don't get me wrong, I've accidentally dropped this thing a dozen times while it was running from my desk, and man its still kicking.

Tablets are great companion devices.
But as a main device for university/college no.

128GB SSD is enough I find.
I have about 50GB in apps+associated support files (Mostly Creative Centric), 10GB in OSX, 20GB Dropbox, 10GB in music, 10GB in CS:GO and the remaining space for current work to rotate with.

20GB-30GB buffer generally in which I rotate about.

I really, really wanted to get the macbook Air. I love the design more than Pro, the weigh, but i cannot get behind the display. Like the above mentioned, when it comes to movies/photos, retina is clearly better, but what about dealing with a lot of text? I imagine that the sharper and more anti aliased nature of higher resolution would make a world of difference for long hours. Also im really into that display scaling feature that retinas have, i want to set it to max desktop space, or scaled as 1050p, where on the Air I'm stuck with smaller screen area at 900p. If only the Air had retina screen.
Also contrast, black/white levels and viewing angles seem to be improved on retina as opposed to non-retina.

This is pretty much what I did. Have you had hands on experience with the Air? With my 11", it took around a month for me to get adjusted to the resultion because of the screen being the smallest I've really used that resolution at (PC/Mac-wise). I am able to use it hours on end without any troubles. With the battery life improvements of the new gens of the Air, I'm very tempted to get a new, 13" model. I mean 12 hours of battery life? And it's still stupid small and light? Yes sir.

This is why i am waiting for the haswell retinas tho. I believe the 13" will have the iris 5100, and a full i5 processor instead of a ULV one as in the Air, but seeing how the Air is reaching 12 hours on Mountain Lion and up to 15-16 on Mavericks beta (because of that App Nap and CPU cycle compression), Im expecting the retina pro haswell to do at least 9-10 on ML and 12-13 on Mavericks. So the battery would be almost as good as the Air, with only differences in resolution and slightly thicker.

So in the end id still want to wait for it because of the retina display and its scaling feature

That's a very good point, actually. My only qualm with the rMBP is that it didn't come with its' own dedicated GPU like it's older brother. It's unnecessary as has been endlessly discussed, but it still would have been nice. Especially at its' price.

However, I just picked up a 2013 MBA (11") today and it's just as great as my 2011 (GF currently has). I won't get to test the battery life too much tonight, but if you're open to the option, the 13" MBA and an iPad is actually relatively close in price to that of the rMBP alone...close enough to be up for consideration at least wink.gif.

Also, the main reasons i want a mac
1. Build quality - sexy, sturdy, one piece aluminium, no separate parts, no crevices, no plastic Iffy thing is pretty ugly and has a huge bezel I have think the Sony pro 13 and acer s7 are much better looking
2. Glass touchpad - i have yet to use a windows base laptop that has a touchpad as smooth and accurate as the macs I agree best touchpad I used
3. Os x imo is way better than windows for portable computers, whereas windows beats os x hands down on desktop. Os x has advantage in battery optimization, gestures, etc... When it comes to laptops, and i dont really need microsoft office because google docs/drive + iwork is what im used to, except for excell, but i have that on my desktop False I have macbook air and get the same battery life in windows 8
4. I love the apple ecosystem. I got an iPhone and i will be continuing to get one for the foreseeable future because i got used to apples integration of calendar, email, reminders, itunes, photos, with all their devices. I use Microsoft system

BTW where can i get that batman one? It looks goddamn amazing

I brought mine from b and h i5/256gb/8gb
