First time Deliding I5 3570k Questions

I want to delid my I5 3570k and wonder what is the best method to use. Razor or vice methods. I have not done one before so any tips and video links are appreciated. Also, what is the best tim to use inside the chip. Will Arctic Silver 5 work. I have a big tube of that, what would you recommend.

Most people recommend the vice method over the razor method. There is a very high chance of scratching the CPU with the razor method.

I recommend that you get a really good TIM for the die, something like Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra or Pro: http://www.coollaboratory.com/en/products/liquid-ultra/

This is a pretty good video on how to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu03beZlOjw

Why exactly do you want to do this? Are you an extreme overclocker? It is pretty easy to kill a CPU if you delid it, not worth the risk IMO.

Why is it bad to delid,or is just bad if you do it wrong. If done right does it reduce the life of the chip. You would think if done right it would make it last longer due to the reduced temps. Now I don't know which way to go. I do overclock some 3.4 to 4.5-4.8.Delid or no Delid. That is the question.

It's not bad, it just the risk involved in delidding.

If you delid successfully the CPU should run fine. I just don't see the point of risking a $200 chips just to get a couple hundred more mhz from it. That little boost is not worth a $200 risk to me. If you think you could benefit from it, go ahead and delid, just be careful!!

I did my 3770k a few weeks ago with the razor method, just took my time and no issues. Used CLU between the dye and the IHS. Dropped temps 20C, just take your time and be patient.

I used this kind of razor blade, very cheap and readily available

If higher clocks are worth possibly losing warranty or the cpu over, delidding can get the temps down & leave some more overclocking headroom. I still think better cooling is preferable since it can generally be used for future builds as well, the guys who did kill a chip or 2 delidding could have had a heck of a cooling system for the wasted money, but then new cooling can be a lot more expensive than a successful delid.

I delidded my first couple 3770k with a razor blade, no issues or scratches, just have to take your time & be careful, do not angle the blade or flex it towards the PCB.

The 4770k I used the vise method, & do recommend that way. It was faster, easier, & more difficult to scratch up the PCB.

The liquid metal TIMs like coolaboratories CLU or CLP are the best to use on the die, it's the closest we can get to solder. Other TIMs will work, just not usually quite as well.

I Delided my I5 3570k this afternoon with the vice method and she flew off in two taps with the hammer. I never had any coolaboratories CLU or CLP,but I found a tube Arctic MX4 and put that between the dye and the IHS.I used it also on top of the cover of the cpu. After I got it all back together she booted up ok and I ran prime 95 for about 4 hours to see how my 3.4 overclock to 4.5 would go.27 24 29 29 at idle and when prime was run it was 54 58 57 55.with 4.5 oc my volts was 1.144 and if I remember correctly before the delid and ran prime my temps were on avg 9 deg higher per core.So I got a 9 deg drop in max temps with the Artic MX4 .Do you think if I used the coolaboratories CLU or CLP I would of gotten better temps,if so by how much do you think. If I get some CLU to put between the dye and the IHS, what would you recommend to put between the cpu cover and my Swiftech H220 waterblock heatsink,I read some where here its not good to put between the waterblock and cpu cover, something about it dries out too fast. Anyway any input in all this is greatly appreciated.
