To SLI or not

Thread Starter
Hi guys, i havent been around here for some time. Busy with IRL stuff so i figured id finally ask.

I currently have a Asus GTX670 Top edition. Decent OCs, can get to the 1300 mark.

Anyways, ive been itching to either pickup a second one to SLI or just grab a more recent card. Problem im having is, it looks like the Top edition is no longer available, and the other Asus cards are still in the $350 price range. CDN.

I would love to get some feedback as to if its still worth spending that much on a second 670, or just sell mine and possibly get a 780+

Any feedback in greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

This is one of the problems with SLI: finding another card down the road, especially if you went custom in the first place.

Most people like matching cards for the looks, but you need matching clocks, memory buffer and matching core. you can manually adjust clocks using EVGA Precision, MSI afterburner etc....to run both cards at same clocks..

If you run two cards at different clock, I think the SLI setup will run at the lowest of the two card's clock. If you run a 2GB and 4GB card, the memory buffer will reflect 2GB max...you CAN't run cards that use different cores (ex being 560Ti 384 cores with a 560Ti 448 cores...although this example is rare with the last few gens...

so most people say that you should buy one powerful card and SLI down the road, that make sense, but it's harder to find cards!

I suggest you post in the WTB (want to buy) section of forums, so some dude might be tempted to get in touch with you to sell you his card...

Well first off why do want a 2nd card? Are you gaming @ 1080p? Are you struggling to maintain decent frame rates in your games?

Or is it just for the eepeen, which is cool cause it's your $

To be honest, its more for BF4, and upcoming games. SO i guess you can say epeen.

670s scale well and aren't known to have problems.

DO IT FOR THE E-PEEN!

Whats the difference between a TOP and a normal DCU? I think its just a factory OC.... So just get a DCU (they look the same dont they?) and call it a day.

just get a Direct CU model. I have a very strong feeling the only difference is the TOP comes with a 157Mhz overclock, which is nothing special. There are tons of GTX670 Direct CUs on Ebay.

oops, got an error so I didn't think my first post edited. Sorry for the double post!

Say no more, cause that's exactly why I bought my 2nd 680. It'll be okay if you get another 670 from a different vendor (EVGA is an excellent choice) but as Delavan said just be aware that the cards will run at the lower clock speed but in any case you'll get a nice performance boost. Those should be enough to hold you down if you're gaming @ 1080p.

SLI 670's are great!

You don't need another TOP version though.

Just grab a 670 FTW or any other one that's already nicely factory OC'd
