HD PC Gaming

Thread Starter
Hey all. Before you start flaming me for being a noob, etc, etc, please answer this knowing that I'm very precautionate about these kind of things, and like to be in the know. I am posting this to gain knowledge, and hopefully some others will learn.

Alright, onto the question:

The 360, PS3, Wii, etc, all boast HD-technology, right? Well. How about games such as CSS, COD2, etc, and all the latest high-end graphics games that are out now? Are they in HD?

I know that the resolutions for HD are:

720p - 1280x720
1080 i/p - 1920x1080

And I know that if you run a 360, for example, in these resolutions on a PC monitor, you will be viewing the picture in High Definition.

But if I took a recent game and set the resolution to 1280x720, for example, would I be viewing the game in High Definition? Or does the system work differently for PC games - is every resolution in HD?

My graphics card said on the box 'Enjoy an intense HD Gaming Experience' - yet I haven't seen any games boast 'HD Compatible', etc, on their boxes.

I need someone to clear my head of this with an indepth answer. Thankyou in advance to who can put me out of my mind on this issue.

- John.

I believe that all current games on the PC are HD..

I mean, isn't that all HD is? Higher resolution?

pcs have been displaying "hi def" resolutions for alot longer than the tvs have been around, normal television resolution is 480p. So in answer to your question, yes, a 1080i/p tv displays at 1920x1080, and you can display that resolution on your pc monitor, however, you can display resolution higher than that on your computer if you have a good enough video card.

Alright, so what you're saying is that even though I run my games in 1440x900, that's still displayed in HD?

Well, 720p is at 1280x720. And that isn't that high. But it isn't a very high HD rating at that.

It confuses me alot, this subject, because, we don't notice whether our games are HD or not - because it becomes second nature.

Yes. When you're talking about PC games, don't worry about the "HD" label. That's all marketing hype reserved for TVs because legacy TVs had such poor resolution. We PC gamers blew through the so-called "HD resolutions" years ago. Who doesn't play games in at least 1024x768 these days? Which is higher res that 720p.

The real difference is that, on a TV, there are only a handful of standard resolutions that are considered HD. You guys have already posted them, and they are all widescreen. On a PC, obviously we can set many more resolutions. But as long as you set up at least 720 lines of resolution, you're equalling or exceeding the minimum to be considered "HD".

You only left out one thing that the game has to be before it can be considered HD. You have to have it in widescreen. The HD standard is 16x9 so if you are using a 4x3 resolution you are not in true HD.

Doesn't have to be widescreen to be considered "High Definition". Resolution is all that matters. HDTV on the other hand is in 16:9 format.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television
High-definition television (HDTV) is a television broadcasting system with a significantly higher resolution than traditional formats (NTSC, SECAM, PAL) allow.
