Option of SLI gtx 660 TI whenever I want or watercooled GTX 670? Come in. I'll explain...

Me and my wife both have computers with a MSI Twin Frozr IV GTX 660 TI 2GB in it. For the most part, I have the option of borrowing her gpu to sli with mine any time I should want to since she hardly ever uses her pc. I haven't in the year we've had them. I digress. I also have the option of moving both gpus to one computer and buying a new gpu for the other after a couple years once games get more demanding.

Sitting next to me is a EVGA GTX 670 2GB with EK full cover waterblock and back plate that I bought impulsively because it was too good of a deal to pass up. I already have a CPU loop and would only need to purchase a second radiator and a couple fittings to add the 670 to it. If I buy a radiator and sell my 660 TI (I'll have to sell it to keep the 670) i'll have sunk about $100 for the change out.

I'll also add that I currently game at 1920x1080 and will for the foreseeable future.

I now find myself second guessing keeping my new toy. While dabbling in gpu watercooling is very appealing so is the option for SLI on demand or as an upgrade path in the future. Either way I go it'll stay that way for probably a couple years, or at least until games exceed my hardware by a large margin.

Now, what would you do? Get my money back out of the GTX 670 and stick with the 660 TI and option for SLI or play around with the GTX 670? Opinions, advice, criticism, and heckling are all welcome.

I've never SLI'd before in the past, and it isn't anything I've researched too much before, but I always here the horror stories with stuttering and bad support at game launches.
On the other hand, I've also heard this has got better.

I'd not rule out SLi in the future, and you'd definitely get better performance out of two 660's than you would a 670. Given that you've tried this before though, I assume you've had no problems.
I'd have the two 660s I think and give her the 670.

I wouldn't be keeping all three cards. I'd either keep one 660ti in each pc or one of the 660ti in her pc and the 670 in mine. I've never actually used her card for sli in mine, I just always liked the though that I could do it if I wanted to. Games at 1080p don't really seem to need kind of horsepower though, now or in the near future. rolleyes.gif

If it was me in that position then, I'd probably keep the 670. But, that's because I'd rather have the best of everything.
On the other hand, I don't think there's that much of a performance increase between the two.

I suppose you'd have to compare the cost between returning the 670, or selling a 660, plus the added cost of setting up the water cooling.

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-670-vs-GeForce-GTX-660-Ti

That shows a few comparisons between the two, with the average FPS on some games too.

If it were my money, I would get rid of the 670 and stick with the 660 Ti's instead. The performance of the 670 over the 660 Ti is so small, you'd be hard pressed to really notice the difference:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/860?vs=830

A pair of 660 Ti's down the road will have significant longevity over a 670 for sure. Best of all, since you already own them, it would cost you nothing - especially if the misses can make do with the Intel integrated GPU.

Furthermore, since Kepler cards aren't very hot GPU's to begin with, watercooling them may not show much benefit either, unless the stock cooler's noise really bothers you. With that said, it's nothing a pair of universal GPU blocks and some RAM sinks can't fix if heat and noise become a problem when you decide to pair the cards up. Plus, the universal blocks would be reusable for future cards should you decide to keep the watercooling spirit up. thumb.gif

Haha. You're right. I've actually decided to go the universal gpu block route on my 660 TI for audibility and hobbyist reasons. It makes more sense both financially and perceptively.
