Newbie ? More cooling for this case/mobo..pls help...

Hi Everyone,

Well I have really been learning alot on this site! I am brand spankin new to Overclocking and I am pretty sure that my "coolin" for my computer is going to have to be beefed up.

I have a Startech ATXALUMGT case....http://www.meanmachine.com/Cases/Sta...Case_Specs.htm

I have an Asus K8V SE Deluxe MOBO with an Athlon 64 3000+ with stock heatsink and fan. I also have a Radeon 9800XT with stock fan on it as well. I have a 500 w powersupply with fan on it.

Ok...I have a fan opposite the mobo that exhausts air out. The Power supply fan blows across the power supply and out the back of the case. So I have no fans blowing in. ON the rear of the case there is a dust guard with vents and spots for 2 fans, however there are none there.

When I run MBM5 and the ASUS power utility, I have readouts for the case fan and the CPU fan. However, I cannot control them that I know.

I would like to come up with the best cooling plan for my case. I could easily turn the side fan so that it blows in and I could put a couple of fans on the back to blow out....but I am not sure if this is the best way.

I assume that you would at least want one fan blowing in right?

Any suggestions???? I also have no idea on how to hook the fan's up to power supplies but I have a bunch of the 4-pin molex connectors that are not used. Could I control them that way???

Thanks again for all the help....I know that I must get really good airflow if I plan to overclock so this is the first step. I am not interested in going the liquid route for this computer at all.

Regards,

First off, Welcome to OC.net!

I'm a newbie too so we're pretty much on the same boat
You can add fans in the drive bays if you have slots open. There's a build log where someone added a 120mm fan that took up 3 drive bays.

Is there a mount in the front lower area for an intake fan?

The side case fan should be an intake fan. The two rear fans (which you need to buy) should be exhaust. Most motherboards can control only three fans total. One for the CPU, one for the chipset, and one for the case. If you want to control any more fans, you will need a front bay fan controller. All the case fans would then be hooked up and controlled by it.
Once again...

DuckieHo,

Thanks for the response....no there is not a place for a fan in the lower front of the case unfortunately. I think that I may have to reverse the fan on the side (it is currently exhaust) and install 2 fans in the rear for exhaust. This way there will be intake on the side and exhaust all in the back.

Installed 2 Antec 80mm blue LED fans to the back of the case. Took a bit of time but they look pretty cool and they run well! I have them both set to exhaust out the back and I reversed the side fan for intake now. Now I have to start trying to OC a bit....LOL....

Welcome to the forum. Not that I'm doubting you about no fan spot in the front lower part of the case but did you try taking out the front panel of the case. Just from looking at the picture, it looks like you can put an 80mm fan there. Good luck with your overclocking.

Go,

I just dont see what purpose it would serve. You see that case has a motorized door that moves up and down the front. In addition, ther is an LET pannel with a power/reset switch and a hub for some audio and USB stuff. There would be simply no way to get air in from the lower front...it is all blocked. Ideally this would be the way to go but unfortunately I cant a fan there. No worries though...reversing the side fan blows directly on my RAM and the 2 exhaust fans I put in are working great! Glad I went with the Blue LED...really lights up my interior.
